As has been the practice at King of Glory over the past years, we do not hold a Sunday evening service on the Thanksgiving holiday. St. David’s/Trinity has once again invited us to worship them at 10:30 on Sunday or as interim at Resurrection I will be conducting the service at 10:00. I invite you to attend one of these services.
Pentecost begins with a rush–the rushing, life-giving wind of God’s Spirit. We also remember that Sunday is a day of rest. Rest is not meant to emphasize relaxation as much as it does renewal. The Church year season of Pentecost recognizes that God’s Spirit breathes into us life-giving re-creation. The readings for these months of Summer worship focus on who we are in Christ, what is the nature of faith, what is the living out of this faith, what the life of following Jesus is all about. The Bread of Life, like the manna in the wilderness, and like the bread on the Lord’s table, declares how near and involved our God actually is in our daily lives. Through Christ’s word and Spirit we have refreshment and renewal.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
WE REMEMBER OUR BAPTISMS, CONFESS OUR FAITHLESSNESS,
AND HEAR GOD’S FAITHFUL PROMISE OF FORGIVENESS
Pastor: Blessed be the holy Trinity:
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
who forgives all our sin,
whose mercy endures forever.
People: Amen.
Pastor: God of all mercy and consolation,
come to the aid of your people,
turning us from sin
to live for you alone.
Give us the power of your Holy Spirit
that, attentive to your Word,
we may confess our sins,
receive your forgiveness,
bear with one another in love,
maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace,
and grow into the fullness of your Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord.
People: Amen.
Pastor: Let us confess our sin in the
presence of God and of one another. Reconciling God, People: you seek peace and unity among us, but too often we choose walls of isolation. You seek to be one with your creation, but we turn away your loving Spirit. In your forgiving love, break down the barriers we create, that we might see more clearly your love for us, be reconciled with our neighbour, and trust more deeply your promise of eternal life. Amen.
Pastor: We who once were far off
have been brought near to God
through the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and by the power of the Holy Spirit.
May our all-loving God through the Holy Spirit
grant you grace to forgive one another
as God in Christ has forgiven you.
People: Amen.

Listen through the Magnificat. It ends at 10:40
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Benevolent, merciful God: When we are empty fill us. When we are weak in faith, strengthen us. We we are cold in love, warm us, that with fervour we may love our neighbours and serve them for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord. Amen.
First Reading
Habakkuk 1:1-4, 2:1-4
O Lord, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not listen? Or cry to you ‘Violence!’ and you will not save? Why do you make me see wrongdoing and look at trouble? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. So the law becomes slack and justice never prevails. The wicked surround the righteous— therefore judgement comes forth perverted.
I will stand at my watch-post, and station myself on the rampart; I will keep watch to see what he will say to me, and what he will answer concerning my complaint. Then the Lord answered me and said: Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it. For there is still a vision for the appointed time; it speaks of the end, and does not lie. If it seems to tarry, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay. Look at the proud! Their spirit is not right in them, but the righteous live by their faith.
Second Reading 2 Timothy 1:1-14 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, for the sake of the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, To Timothy, my beloved child:
Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
I am grateful to God—whom I worship with a clear conscience, as my ancestors did—when I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. Recalling your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you. For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.
Do not be ashamed, then, of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God, who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace. This grace was given to us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Saviour Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. For this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher, and for this reason I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know the one in whom I have put my trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard until that day what I have entrusted to him. Hold to the standard of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us.
Gospel Reading Luke 17:5-10 The apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith!’ The Lord replied, ‘If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, “Be uprooted and planted in the sea”, and it would obey you.
‘Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from ploughing or tending sheep in the field, “Come here at once and take your place at the table”? Would you not rather say to him, “Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink”? Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, “We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!” ’

Build us up, Lord, build us up; set in us a strong foundation. Lead us to do your holy will; form and shape your new creation.

Refrain: Growing in Christ, we plant seeds for the kingdom; we follow in faith what’s begun! Lord, set in our hearts the pow’r of your word to spread the news of your Son!
Build us up, Lord, build us up; let our lives reflect your glory. Cast away all our doubts and fears; help us tell the world your story.

[click on the link below]
Many and great oh God are your works
Maker of earth and sky
Your hands have set the heavens with stars
Your fingers spread the mountains and plains
Lo, at your word the waters were formed
Deep seas obey your voice
Grant unto us communion with Thee
Thou star, abiding One
Come unto us and dwell with us
With you are found the gifts of life
Bless us with life that has no end
Eternal life with you
DISMISSAL
Pastor: Go in peace, renewed with Christ’s Spirit to love and to serve.
People: Thanks be to God.
BLESSING OF ANIMALS
Pastor: The animals of God’s creation inhabit the skies, the earth, and the sea. They share in the fortunes of human existence and have a part in human life. God, who confers gifts on all living things, has often used the service of animals or made them reminders of the gifts of salvation.
People: Animals were saved from the flood and afterwards made a part of the covenant with Noah.
The paschal lamb recalls the passover sacrifice and the deliverance from slavery in Egypt.
A giant fish saved Jonah;
ravens brought bread to Elijah;
animals were included in the repentance of Nineveh;
and animals share in Christ’s redemption of all God’s creation.
Pastor: We, therefore, invoke God’s blessing on these animals. As we do so, let us praise the Creator and thank God for allowing us to care for all the creatures of the earth.
Pastor: Let us pray.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, who in your self-emptying love gathered up and reconciled all creation to God. Innumerable galaxies of the heavens worship you. Creatures that grace the earth rejoice in you. All those in the deepest seas bow to you in adoration. As with them we give you praise, grant that we may cherish the earth, our home, and live in harmony with this good creation, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
People: Amen, amen. Shalom, Shalom
OUR COVENANT WITH ALL CREATION
People: Source and sustainer of life we cherish the myriad works of your hands. Water, earth, and sky are yours, as are all their inhabitants, wild and tame. We thank you for creatures that nourish and serve us, befriend, enrich, entertain, and protect us. We, who are made in your image, pledge to care for all your creatures well. We dedicate ourselves to your groaning yet wondrous creation to enable it to rally and to thrive so that it might reveal to all who come after us your wise, redemptive, and transfiguring love.
Psalm 148
Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord from the heavens
Praise him in the heights.
Praise him, all angels
Praise him, all his host.
Praise him, sun and moon;
Praise him, all you shining stars.
Praise him, you highest heavens,
And you waters above the heavens.
Let them praise the name of the Lord,
For he commanded and they were created.
He established them forever and ever;
He fixed their bounds, which cannot be passed.
Praise the Lord from the earth,
You sea monsters and all deeps.
Fire and Hail, snow and frost,
Stormy wind fulling his command.
Mountains and all hills,
Fruit trees and all cedars,
Wild animals and all cattle,
Creeping things and flying birds.
Kings of the earth and all peoples,
Princes and all rulers of the earth.
Young men and women alike,
Old and young together.
Let them praise the name of the Lord,
For his name alone is exalted
His glory is above earth and heaven.
He has raised up a horn for his people.
Praise for all his faithful,
For the people of Israel who are close to him.
Praise the Lord.
Francis of Assisi’s Sermon to the Birds
My little sisters, the birds, many are the bonds which unite us to God. And your duty is to praise God everywhere and always, because he has let you free to fly wherever you will, and has given you a double and three-fold covering and the beautiful colored plumage you wear.
Praise God likewise for the food he provides for you without your working for it, for the songs he has taught you, for your numbers that his blessing has multiplied, for your species which he preserved in the ark of olden times, and for the realm of the air he has reserved for you.
God sustains you without your having to sow or reap. He gives you fountains and streams to drink from, mountains and hills in which to take refuge, and tall trees in which to build your nests. Although you do not know how to sew or spin, God gives to you and your little ones the clothing you need.
How the Creator must love you to grant you such favors! So, my sister birds, do not be ungrateful, but continually praise God who showers blessing upon you.
Hymn: All Things Bright and Beautiful
[click on the link below]
All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful:
The Lord God made them all.
Each little flow’r that opens,
Each little bird that sings,
He made their glowing colors,
He made their tiny wings.
The purple-headed mountains,
The river running by,
The sunset and the morning
That brightens up the sky.
The cold wind in the winter,
The pleasant summer sun,
The ripe fruits in the garden,
He made them every one.
He gave us eyes to see them,
And lips that we might tell
How great is God Almighty,
Who has made all things well.
BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS
People: Gracious God, in your love you created us in your image and made us to care for all the animals that live in the skies, the earth, and the sea. Bless our pets and all your animals, wild and tame. Help us recognize your power and wisdom in all the creatures that live in our world. Bless their variety and their own created beauty. Protect your creatures, and guard them from evil, and hear our prayer for all that suffer overwork, hunger, and ill-treatment. Amen.
Bless, O Lord, these creatures, and fill our hearts with thanksgiving
for its their being. Amen.
Pastor: Let us pray.
God created us and placed us on the earth to be stewards of all living things, therefore let us proclaim the glory of our Creator, saying:
People: O God, how wonderful are the works of your hands.
Pastor: Blessed are you, O Lord of the Universe; you create the animals and give us the ability to train them to help us in our work.
People: O God, how wonderful are the works of your hands.
Pastor: Blessed are you, O Lord of the Universe; you give us food from animals to replenish our energies.
People: O God, how wonderful are the works of your hands.
Pastor: Blessed are you, O Lord of the Universe; for the sake of our comfort you give us domestic animals as companions.
People: O God, how wonderful are the works of your hands.
Pastor: Blessed are you, O Lord of the Universe; you care for us even as you care for the birds of the air.
People: O God, how wonderful are the works of your hands.
Pastor: Blessed are you, O Lord of the Universe; you offered your Son to us as the passover lamb and in him willed that we should be called your children.
People: O God, how wonderful are the works of your hands.
A Benediction of Hope
Pastor: Patient Lord of Life, your word foretells a day when the wolf will lie down with the lamb. Renew our vision for the peaceable kingdom for all your creation.
People: Amen, Shalom, Shalom.

HOLDEN EVENING PRAYER

Listen through the Magnificat. It ends at 10:40
PRAYER OF THE DAY
O God, rich in mercy, you look with compassion on this troubled world. Feed us with your grace, and grant us the treasure that comes only from you, Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord. Amen.
First Reading
Amos 6:1a, 4-7
Alas for those who are at ease in Zion, and for those who feel secure on Mount Samaria, the notables of the first of the nations, to whom the house of Israel resorts! Alas for those who lie on beds of ivory, and lounge on their couches, and eat lambs from the flock, and calves from the stall; who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp, and like David improvise on instruments of music; who drink wine from bowls, and anoint themselves with the finest oils, but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph! Therefore they shall now be the first to go into exile, and the revelry of the loungers shall pass away.
Second Reading 1 Timothy 6:6-19 Of course, there is great gain in godliness combined with contentment; for we brought nothing into the world, so that we can take nothing out of it; but if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these. But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains.
But as for you, man of God, shun all this; pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. In the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you to keep the commandment without spot or blame until the manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ, which he will bring about at the right time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords. It is he alone who has immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see; to him be honour and eternal dominion. Amen.
As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life.
Gospel Reading Luke 16:19-31 ‘There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man’s table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores. The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side. He called out, “Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames.” But Abraham said, “Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony. Besides all this, between you and us a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us.” He said, “Then, father, I beg you to send him to my father’s house— for I have five brothers—that he may warn them, so that they will not also come into this place of torment.” Abraham replied, “They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them.” He said, “No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.” He said to him, “If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.”

“Gather Us In”
[click on the link below]
Here in this place new light is streaming Now is the darkness vanished away See in this space our fears and our dreamings Brought here to you in the light of this day Gather us in, the lost and forsaken Gather us in, the blind and the lame Call to us now and we shall awaken We shall arise at the sound of our name
We are the young, our lives are a mystery We are the old who yearn for your face We have been sung throughout all of history Called to be light to the whole human race Gather us in, the rich and the haughty Gather us in, the proud and the strong Give us a heart so meek and so lowly Give us the courage to enter the song
Here we will take the wine and the water Here we will take the bread of new birth Here you shall call your sons and your daughters Call us anew to be salt for the earth Give us to drink the wine of compassion Give us to eat the bread that is you Nourish us well and teach us to fashion Lives that are holy and hearts that are true
Not in the dark of buildings confining Not in some heaven light years away But here in this place the new light is shining Now is the kingdom, now is the day Gather us in and hold us forever Gather us in and make us your own Gather us in, all peoples together Fire of love in our flesh and our bone

CLOSING HYMN
“Where Cross the Crowded Ways of Life”
[click on the link below]
Where Cross the Crowded Ways of Life
where sound the cries of race and clan,
above the noise of selfish strife,
we hear your voice, O Son of man.
In haunts of wretchedness and need,
on shadowed thresholds dark with fears,
from paths where hide the lures of greed,
we catch the vision of your tears.
From tender childhood’s helplessness,
from woman’s grief, man’s burdened toil,
from famished souls, from sorrow’s stress,
your heart has never known recoil.
The cup of water given for you
still holds the freshness of your grace;
yet long these multitudes to view
the sweet compassion of your face.
O Master, from the mountainside
make haste to heal these hearts of pain;
among these restless throngs abide;
O tread the city’s streets again.
Till all the world shall learn your love
and follow where your feet have trod,
till, glorious from your heaven above,
shall come the city of our God!
DISMISSAL
Pastor: Go in peace, renewed with Christ’s Spirit to love and to serve.

PRAYER OF THE DAY
God among us, we gather in the name of your Son to learn love for one another. Keep our feet from evil paths. Turn our minds to your wisdom and our hearts to the grace revealed in your Son, Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord. Amen.
First Reading
Amos 8:4-7
Hear this, you that trample on the needy, and bring to ruin the poor of the land, saying, ‘When will the new moon be over so that we may sell grain; and the sabbath, so that we may offer wheat for sale? We will make the ephah small and the shekel great, and practise deceit with false balances, buying the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, and selling the sweepings of the wheat.’
The Lord has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Surely I will never forget any of their deeds.
Second Reading 1 Timothy 2:1-7 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings should be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God; there is also one mediator between God and humankind, Christ Jesus, himself human, who gave himself a ransom for all —this was attested at the right time. For this I was appointed a herald and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.
Gospel Reading Luke 16:1-13 Then Jesus said to the disciples, ‘There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was squandering his property. So he summoned him and said to him, “What is this that I hear about you? Give me an account of your management, because you cannot be my manager any longer.” Then the manager said to himself, “What will I do, now that my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. I have decided what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome me into their homes.” So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he asked the first, “How much do you owe my master?” He answered, “A hundred jugs of olive oil.” He said to him, “Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty.” Then he asked another, “And how much do you owe?” He replied, “A hundred containers of wheat.” He said to him, “Take your bill and make it eighty.” And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes.
‘Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much. If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own? No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.’

HYMN OF THE DAY
“Son of God, Eternal Savior”
[click on the link below]
Son of God, eternal Savior, Source of life and truth and grace, Son of Man, whose birth incarnate Hallows all our human race, Thou, our head who, throned in glory, For Thine own dost ever plead, Fill us with Thy love and pity; Heal our wrongs, and help our need.
As Thou, Lord, hast lived for others, So may we for others live; Freely have Thy gifts been granted, Freely may Thy servants give. Thine the gold and Thine the silver, Thine the wealth of land and sea, We but stewards of Thy bounty, Held in solemn trust for Thee.
Come, O Christ, and reign among us, King of love, and Prince of peace, Hush the storm of strife and passion, Bid its cruel discords cease: By Thy patient years of toiling, By Thy silent hours of pain, Quench our fevered thirst of pleasure, Shame our selfish greed of gain.
Son of God, eternal Savior, Source of life and truth and grace, Son of Man, whose birth incarnate Hallows all our human race, Thou who prayedst, Thou who willest, That Thy people should be one, Grant, O grant our hope’s fruition: Here on earth Thy will be done.

God our Creator, through whose providing we find all goodness and life, we give thanks for the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Turn our minds and hearts to your mercy and hope as the family, a nation, the Commonwealth, and the world mourns her loss. Comfort all who mourn with the assurance that you have drawn her into your eternal reign of grace, love and peace.
Let righteousness roll on as others’ cares we heed,
an ever-flowing stream of faith translated into deed.
So may God’s plumb-line, straight, define our measure true,
and justice, right, and peace pervade this world our whole life through.

PRAYER OF THE DAY
O God, overflowing with mercy and compassion, you lead back to yourself all those who go astray. Preserve your people in your loving care, that we may reject whatever is contrary to you and may follow all things that sustain our life in your Son, Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord. Amen.
First Reading
Exodus 32:7-14
The Lord said to Moses, ‘Go down at once! Your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have acted perversely; they have been quick to turn aside from the way that I commanded them; they have cast for themselves an image of a calf, and have worshipped it and sacrificed to it, and said, “These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!” ’ The Lord said to Moses, ‘I have seen this people, how stiff-necked they are. Now let me alone, so that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them; and of you I will make a great nation.’
But Moses implored the Lord his God, and said, ‘O Lord, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? Why should the Egyptians say, “It was with evil intent that he brought them out to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth”? Turn from your fierce wrath; change your mind and do not bring disaster on your people. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, how you swore to them by your own self, saying to them, “I will multiply your descendants like the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it for ever.” ’ And the Lord changed his mind about the disaster that he planned to bring on his people.
Second Reading 1 Timothy 1:12-17 I am grateful to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because he judged me faithful and appointed me to his service, even though I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a man of violence. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the foremost. But for that very reason I received mercy, so that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display the utmost patience, making me an example to those who would come to believe in him for eternal life. To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Gospel Reading Luke 15:1-10 Now all the tax-collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, ‘This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.’
So he told them this parable: ‘Which one of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbours, saying to them, “Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.” Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who need no repentance.
‘Or what woman having ten silver coins, if she loses one of them, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbours, saying, “Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.” Just so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.’

“Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound”
[click on the link below]
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now I’m found,
Was blind but now I see.
’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved.
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed.
Through many dangers, toils, and snares
I have already come. ’
Tis grace that brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
When we’ve been here ten thousand years,
Bright, shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we first begun.

PRAYER OF THE DAY
Direct us, O Lord God, in all our doings with your continual help, that in all our works, begun, continued, and ended in you, we may glorify your holy name; and finally, by your mercy, bring us to everlasting life, through Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord. Amen.
First Reading
Deuteronomy 30:15-20
See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity. If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I am commanding you today, by loving the Lord your God, walking in his ways, and observing his commandments, decrees, and ordinances, then you shall live and become numerous, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess. But if your heart turns away and you do not hear, but are led astray to bow down to other gods and serve them, I declare to you today that you shall perish; you shall not live long in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess. I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and holding fast to him; for that means life to you and length of days, so that you may live in the land that the Lord swore to give to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
Second Reading Philemon 1-21 Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother,to Philemon our dear friend and co-worker, to Apphia our sister, to Archippus our fellow-soldier, and to the church in your house: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
When I remember you in my prayers, I always thank my God because I hear of your love for all the saints and your faith towards the Lord Jesus. I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective when you perceive all the good that we may do for Christ. I have indeed received much joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, my brother.
For this reason, though I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do your duty, yet I would rather appeal to you on the basis of love—and I, Paul, do this as an old man, and now also as a prisoner of Christ Jesus. I am appealing to you for my child, Onesimus, whose father I have become during my imprisonment. Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful both to you and to me. I am sending him, that is, my own heart, back to you. I wanted to keep him with me, so that he might be of service to me in your place during my imprisonment for the gospel; but I preferred to do nothing without your consent, in order that your good deed might be voluntary and not something forced. Perhaps this is the reason he was separated from you for a while, so that you might have him back for ever, no longer as a slave but as more than a slave, a beloved brother—especially to me but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.
So if you consider me your partner, welcome him as you would welcome me. If he has wronged you in any way, or owes you anything, charge that to my account. I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand: I will repay it. I say nothing about your owing me even your own self. Yes, brother, let me have this benefit from you in the Lord! Refresh my heart in Christ. Confident of your obedience, I am writing to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say.
Gospel Reading Luke 14:25-33 Now large crowds were travelling with him; and he turned and said to them, ‘Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to ridicule him, saying, “This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.” Or what king, going out to wage war against another king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty thousand? If he cannot, then, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for the terms of peace. So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions.

HYMN OF THE DAY
“Oh, Praise the Gracious Power”
[click on the link below]
Oh, praise the gracious power
that tumbles wall of fear
and gathers in one house of faith
all strangers far and near:
We praise you, Christ!
Your cross has made us one!
Oh, praise persistent truth
that opens fisted minds
and eases from their anxious clutch
the prejudice that blinds:
We praise you, Christ!
Your cross has made us one!
Oh, praise inclusive love,
encircling every race,
oblivious to gender, wealth,
to social rank or place:
We praise you, Christ!
Your cross has made us one!
Oh, praise the word of faith
that claims us as God’s own,
a living temple built on Christ,
our rock and cornerstone:
We praise you, Christ!
Your cross has made us one!
Oh, praise the tide of grace
that laps at every shore
with visions of a world at peace,
no longer bled by war:
We praise you, Christ!
Your cross has made us one!
Oh, praise the power, the truth,
the love, the word, the tide.
Yet more than these, oh, praise their source,
praise Christ the crucified:
We praise you, Christ!
Your cross has made us one!

CLOSING HYMN
“Lord of All Nations, Grant Me Grace”
[click on the link below]
Lord of all nations, grant me grace
To love all people, ev’ry race;
And in each person may I see
My kindred, loved, redeemed by Thee.
Break down the wall that would divide
Thy children, Lord, on ev’ry side.
My neighbor’s good let me pursue;
Let Christian love bind warm and true.
Forgive me, Lord, where I have erred
By loveless act and thoughtless word.
Make me to see the wrong I do
Will crucify my Lord anew.
Give me Thy courage, Lord, to speak
Whenever strong oppress the weak.
Should I myself the victim be,
Help me forgive, rememb’ring Thee.
With Thine own love may I be filled
And by Thy Holy Spirit willed,
That all I touch, where’er I be,
May be divinely touched by Thee.
DISMISSAL
