KOG SERVICE FOR MARCH 28, 2021

The Sunday of the Passion/Palm Sunday

Procession with Palms

Pastor:  Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

People:  Hosanna to the Son of David.

Pastor:  The Lord be with you.

People:  And also with you.

Pastor:  Let us pray.

  Mercifully assist us, O Lord God of our salvation, that we may enter with   joy upon the contemplation of those mighty acts whereby you have   given us life everlasting; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

People:  Amen.

The reading of the processional Gospel:

Mark 11:1-11

Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem

When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples and said to them, ‘Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it. If anyone says to you, “Why are you doing this?” just say this, “The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately.” ’ They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they were untying it, some of the bystanders said to them, ‘What are you doing, untying the colt?’ They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it. Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting,
‘Hosanna!
   Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!
   Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!’

Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple; and when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

Pastor:  The Lord be with you.

People:  And also with you.

Pastor:  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People:  It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Pastor:  We praise and thank you, O God, for the great acts of love by which you   have redeemed the world through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.  On   this day he entered the holy city of Jerusalem in triumph, and was     acclaimed messiah, Son of David and King of kings by those who     scattered their garments and branches of palm in his path.

  We ask that you bless these branches and those who carry them, and   grant that we may ever hail him as our Lord and King and follow him   with perfect confidence.  Give us grace to follow our Lord in the way of   the cross, so that, joined to his death and resurrection;, we enter into life   with you, through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns   with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever,

People:  Amen.

Pastor:  Let us go forth in peace,

People:  in the name of the Lord.

The people process into the church holding their branches

and singing “All Glory, Laud, and Honor.”

Hymn:  All Glory, Laud and Honor

[click on the link below]

Refrain:

All glory, laud, and honor to you, redeemer king,

to whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring.

You are the king of Israel and David’s royal son,

now in the Lord’s name coming, our King and Blessed One.  Refrain

The company of angels are praising you on high;

creation and all mortals in chorus make reply.  Refrain

The multitude of pilgrims with palms before you went;

our praise and prayer and anthems before you we present.  Refrain

Yo you, before your passion, they sang their hymns of praise.

To you, now high exalted, our melody we raise.  Refrain

Their praises you accepted; accept the prayers we bring,

great author of all goodness, O good and gracious king.  Refrain

Pastor:  Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

People:  Hosanna in the highest.

GREETING

Pastor: From our God who loves us with an everlasting love

who brings forth a new creation in Christ,

who leads us by the Spirit in the wilderness,

grace, love and abundant peace be with you all.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Everlasting God, in your endless love for the human race you sent our Lord Jesus Christ to take on our nature and to suffer death on the cross.  In your mercy enable us to share in his obedience to your will and in the glorious victory of his resurrection, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

FIRST READING   Isaiah 50:4-9a

The Lord God has given me
   the tongue of a teacher,
that I may know how to sustain
   the weary with a word.
Morning by morning he wakens—
   wakens my ear
   to listen as those who are taught.
The Lord God has opened my ear,
   and I was not rebellious,
   I did not turn backwards.
I gave my back to those who struck me,
   and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard;
I did not hide my face
   from insult and spitting.

The Lord God helps me;
   therefore I have not been disgraced;
therefore I have set my face like flint,
   and I know that I shall not be put to shame;
   he who vindicates me is near.
Who will contend with me?
   Let us stand up together.
Who are my adversaries?
   Let them confront me.
It is the Lord God who helps me;
   who will declare me guilty?
All of them will wear out like a garment;
   the moth will eat them up.

SECOND READING   Philippians 2:5-11

Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,
who, though he was in the form of God,
   did not regard equality with God
   as something to be exploited,
but emptied himself,
   taking the form of a slave,
   being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form,
   he humbled himself
   and became obedient to the point of death—
   even death on a cross.

Therefore God also highly exalted him
   and gave him the name
   that is above every name,
so that at the name of Jesus
   every knee should bend,
   in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue should confess
   that Jesus Christ is Lord,
   to the glory of God the Father.

GOSPEL READING

HYMN OF THE DAY

“Christ the Life of All the Living”

[click on the link below]

Christ, the life of all the living,

Christ, the death of death, our foe,

Christ, yourself for me once giving

to the darkest depth of woe;

through your suffering, death, and merit

life eternal I inherit.

Thousand, thousand thanks are due,

dearest Jesus unto you.

You have suffered great affliction

and have borne it patiently,

even death by crucifixion,

fully to atone for me;

for you chose to be tormented

that my doom should be prevented.

Thousand, thousand thanks are due,

dearest Jesus unto you.

Then, for all that bought my pardon,

for the sorrows deep and sore,

for the anguish in the garden,

I will thank you evermore;

thank you for the groaning, sighing,

for the bleeding and the dying,

for that last triumphant cry

praise you evermore on high.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE OF FAITH

[The congregational response after each petition is:  “ GRANT US YOUR PEACE.”]

Pastor:  As we journey with Jesus to the cross, the tree of life, witnessing to the transformation of life that comes with faith, repentance and forgiveness, let us pray for the renewal of the Church and the restoration of the whole world to the life of God, saying, “O God, in your compassion” and responding, “Grant us your peace.”

Petitioner: Merciful God, in your boundless compassion you lived among us and suffered death at human hands.  Hold the way of the cross before your people by your Spirit working through your Word and sacraments to make us faithful witnesses of your steadfast love.   Plant Christ’s cross in our hearts, so that as palms were carried in a procession of praise, so now our palms are offered in a life of service to the neighbour and all in need.  O God, in your compassion …

Petitioner:  God of wisdom, through the cross of Christ you have called all people from darkness to light, from error into truth, from death into life.  Raise us by your Spirit.  Revive us by your Word. Form us by your hand.  Remind us of our baptismal waters of life and nourish us with your bread and cup of blessing that we might  see a future of hope, start life anew, and bear witness to your grace.  O God, in your compassion …

Petitioner:   Righteous God, break down the walls of division throughout the world, so that in this Holy Week, people of all faiths may grow in understanding and mutual respect for one another.  Teach us to live with humility with one another and to live with humility and gratitude for the world you created that is groaning under our faithlessness, so that we might show reverence for all people and be humble stewards for all living things.   O God, in your compassion…

Pastor:   Comforting God, you meet us in the depths of human suffering.  Care for all who are weary and weak and who endure doubt, despair, illness, conflict, loss, trials and grief.  We remember especially before you ….   Sustain all in their times of testing.  O God, in your compassion …

Petitioner:   God of new life, we pray for the fragile gift of creation, that our world’s many scars and sufferings find healing in your gracious life-giving love.  Give us the faith and the courage to live in such a way that we do not betray, deny or mock this precious gift, but dedicate our lives to the care and redemption of all that you have made.  O God, in your compassion …

Petitioner:   Praiseworthy God, rescue your beloved, war-weary world from hatred and terror, so that all nations may turn from evil and walk in paths of peace.  Lead all courts and judges, nations and rulers, in your ways of justice.  Be with all who suffer from violence, abuse, oppression, terrorism; end torture, that all may be free from needless and useless suffering.  O God, in your compassion …

Petitioner:   Sustaining God, guard us from betraying you, give us courage that we not deny you, help us wear the cross marked on us in our baptisms and enable us to remain faithful to the new covenant poured out for us in the cup of your salvation.  During this Holy Week guide our walk in the way of the cross, so that we find in it the way of life, joy, peace, service, and hope.   O God, in your compassion …

Pastor:  Gracious God, hear us as we pray.  As you have made us and redeemed us, so now sustain us with your hope, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

People:  Amen.

CLOSING HYMN

“O Sacred Head, Now Wounded”

[click on the link below]

O sacred head, now wounded,

with grief and shame weighed down,

now scornfully surrounded

with thorns, thine only crown;

O sacred head, what glory,

what bliss till now was thine!

Yet, though despised and gory,

I joy to call thee mine.

How pale thou art with anguish,

with sore abuse and scorn;

how does thy face now languish,

which once was bright as morn!

Thy grief and bitter passion

were all for sinners’ gain;

mine, mine was the transgression,

but thine the deadly pain.

What language shall I borrow

to thank thee dearest friend,

for this thy dying sorrow,

thy pity without end?

Oh, make me thine forever,

and should I fainting be,

Lord, let me never, never

outlive my love to thee.

Lord, be my consolation;

shield me when I must die;

remind me of thy passion

when my last hour draws nigh.

These eyes, new faith receiving,

from thee shall never move;

for all who die believing

die safely in thy love.

DISMISSAL

Pastor: Go in peace. Proclaim the love of the life-giving cross.

People: Thanks be to God.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Because of the high level of COVID cases throughout Saskatoon and the province, at an online consultation involving all the church leaders and clergy in the Synod it was strongly recommended that congregations continue to suspend all in person worship services until a time when it is safe to gather together.   King of Glory’s Church Council met to consider this recommendation and unanimously passed a motion that we suspend in person worship services and post online worship services on our website through April 2021. Of course, should there be any significant changes with regard to the pandemic situation the Church Council will revisit the issue.

Dear Friends,

Our long journey in pandemic days continues. With decreasing active case numbers and increasing vaccination numbers, we are hoping for more ‘normal’ days ahead. But we still have some months of ‘working it out’ ahead.

During this time, I am offering an opportunity to be brought together in worship in a synod wide series of Holy Week services.  Services will follow the narrative of Holy Week from Wednesday through Saturday.

Services will be virtual. People can join in individually or in their ‘bubbles’ at home, or could meet with a video screen in their church buildings (following Health Directives).

Services will include readings, music, visuals and enactments. For Maundy Thursday we will be offering virtual communion. Instructions for each service will be given as service begins, and will be distributed before the service on the Synod news through mailchimp.

Services can be accessed live each night at 7 pm through a Zoom link or the recording accessed the next day on Youtube.

KOG SERVICE FOR MARCH 21, 2021

THE LITURGYOF LENT

Lent is, first of all, about God baptizing us into a life of faithful discipleship or, to use Martin Luther’s phrase, “creeping back to the font.” Lent prepares us and leads us to the baptismal font and the Lord’s Table as we are reminded of our baptism into Christ’s death and resurrection. The tone of this Lenten order of worship—in the midst of its call to turn, repent, and be cleansed of sin— is one of promise and hope. Sunday after Sunday the Scripture Readings reflect God’s promises. These promises are centered in the fact that God sends Jesus not to condemn the world but to rescue and heal it, casting out sin and evil. Over and over we will see, hear, touch, and taste, how the impossible difficulties of sin are met with the promise of God’s saving action.

Audio for A Lenten Litany of Confession and Exorcism

A Lenten Litany of Confession and Exorcism

Voice: We are possessed by demons.

All of us.

No matter how many times we pray,

they won’t go away completely.

Moods, habits, devilish desires

inhabit the regions of our hearts and minds

and break out suddenly, without explanation, without warning,

taking us over,

making us someone we would rather not be,

someone we really are not.

All: We are obsessed with demons,

surrounded daily by demonic forces:

drink, drugs, consumerism,

money, power, possessing as much as we can;

they are taking control of our neighborhoods,

trying to break down the doors of our homes

and all too often breaking our hearts and our lives.

Voice: Have mercy on me, O God,

according to your steadfast love;

according to your abundant mercy

blot out my transgressions.

Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,

and cleanse me from my sin.

All: Create in me a clean heart, O God,

and put a new and right spirit within me.

Do not cast me away from your presence,

and do not take your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of your salvation,

and sustain in me a willing spirit.

All: Cast out the demons treacherously lurking within us

and around us, O God.

Voice: Drugs and alcohol are demons.

All: Cast out the demons of drugs and alcohol,

O Christ,

Prevent them from overpowering us.

Voice: Violence and abuse are demons.

All: Cast out the demons of violence and abuse,

Messiah Jesus.

Let them not control our lives.

Voice: Excessive consumption and greed are demons.

All: Cast out the demons of excessive consumption and greed,

O Holy One of God.

Prevent them from dominating our lives.

Voice: Uncontrollable anger is a demon.

All: Cast out the demon of uncontrollable anger,
patient Teacher.

Let it not destroy our lives.

Voice: Injustice is a demon.

All: Cast out the demon of injustice,

merciful Lord.

Let it not oppress our lives.

Voice: Let us put ourselves in the hands of God

Who has overcome the demons.

(Silence for reflection and self-examination)

Voice: God destroyed the demonic forces,

through the cross of Christ,

casting sin from us and giving us the power of forgiveness.

God, now, through the Holy Spirit cleanses and comforts us,

breaking the powers of the evil ones over us

and bringing us to newness of life.

All: Amen.

WORD

THE CHURCH HEARS THE GOOD NEWS OF GOD ACTING
IN THIS AND EVERY TIME AND PLACE

FIRST READING  Jeremiah 31:31-34

The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, ‘Know the Lord’, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

SECOND READING  Hebrews 5:5-10

So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him,
‘You are my Son,
   today I have begotten you’;
as he says also in another place,
‘You are a priest for ever,
   according to the order of Melchizedek.’

In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

THE GOSPEL

Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St.________, the _________ chapter.

People: Glory to you, O Lord.

John 12:20-33

Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, ‘Sir, we wish to see Jesus.’ Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honour.

‘Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say—“Father, save me from this hour”? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name.’ Then a voice came from heaven, ‘I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.’ The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, ‘An angel has spoken to him.’ Jesus answered, ‘This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgement of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.’ He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die.

Pastor: The Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise to you, O Christ.

“In the Cross of Christ I Glory”

[click on the link below]

In the cross of Christ I glory glory,

towering over the wrecks of time.

All the light of sacred story

gathers round its head sublime.

When the woes of life overtake me,

hopes deceive, and fears annoy,

never shall the cross forsake me;

lo, it glows with peace and joy.

When the sun of bliss is beaming

light and love upon my way,

from the cross the radiance streaming

adds more luster to the day.

Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure,

by the cross are sanctified;

peace is there that knows no measure,

joys that through all time abide.

Bill, Carol, Curtis, and Christine Buchkowsky, Teri Peterson, Wayne Turner, Janet Gregory, Jody Giesbrecht, Marge McMillan, Kyrie Parimi, John Beaven, Doris Turner, Hilda Anderson, Linda Wolfe, Naomi, Joan Schock, Bev Gregory, Dale Robinson, Bryan Matschke, AnnE and Joel Zimmerman, Ursula Coakwell, Evelyn Robson, Audrey Hedlin, Liz Sand, Robin Stamm and baby Constantine, the family of Lyle Sand, the family of Marguerite Sanders (Don Sander’s sister), the family of Norm Gregory, and the family of Sophie Kobrynsky (Paul Slusar’s sister), the family of Mary Anderson (Evelyn Robson’s mother), the family of Steve Slusar (Paul Slusar’s brother).

We remember the missing and murdered indigenous women in Canada, the people of Syria, Iraq, Iran, Ukraine, Sudan, South Sudan, Afghanistan, Yemen, Venezuela, Somalia, Libya, Hong Kong, the Palestinians and Israelis,  Ethiopia, Myanmar, the Rohingya Muslim refugees, all at the Mexico/United States border seeking refuge, the people of Haiti suffering from natural and political disasters, the people of the Bahamas suffering from hurricanes, those in the United States, Canada, and throughout the world caught up in racism and injustice and the resulting violence, and those throughout the world, in Canada, in our province, and in our community threatened by the coronavirus.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE OF FAITH

 [The congregational response after each petition is:  “GRANT US YOUR PEACE.”]

Pastor:  As we journey with Jesus to the cross, the tree of life, witnessing to the transformation of life that comes with faith, repentance and forgiveness, let us pray for the renewal of the Church and the restoration of the whole world to the life of God, saying, “O God in your compassion,” and responding, “Grant us your peace.”

Petitioner:  Merciful God, we are sealed in our earthy, tomb-like existence to be our own gods.  Through the living waters of baptism, the Spirit filled power of the Word, and the nourishing grace of your supper enable us to find life where there is death, freedom where there is bondage, and light where there is darkness.    O God in your compassion …

Petitioner:   Righteous God, provide Christ’s call to life for all citizens of the world, that where political or economic crises threaten to destroy, the life-giving Spirit of God will bring hope and true peace.  Grant wisdom and compassion to the world’s decision makers.  Guide them to work for peace and the well-being of all people.   O God in your compassion …

Petitioner:   Gracious God, through the cross of Christ lift us up so that we might live in joy and peace.  Write a new covenant on our hearts, renew a right spirit within us, that we might see Jesus in one another and in the stranger.  O God in your compassion …

Pastor:   Comforting God, you know the troubles of our lives, hear the cries of the sick and dying, all who bear doubt and are in despair, for those who are afraid and live in hiding, the lost and forgotten, those waiting for answers to prayers, and those caught up in conflict, loss, or  grief.  We remember especially before you ….  Call us out from all that entombs us and bring us into your life-giving grace..   O God in your compassion …

Petitioner:   Praiseworthy God, you bring all creation to life and make it bear fruit.  We pray for farmers and ranchers; for budding trees; for animals coming out of hibernation or giving birth; for deserts, tundra, and all places where living conditions are harsh.  Turn the winteriness of our stewardship into the spring of care, that we might live, and that we might renew your creation and bear witness to your love for all that is yours. O God in your compassion …

Petitioner:  God of new life, you show us how to live in joy and peace.  Raise us up from the waters of our baptism to be a new people sent forth into the world, not to condemn but to offer mercy.  Lead us all through our times of barrenness and blindness to see that Christ was lifted up in death so that we might know God’s love and mercy for all creation.  O God in your compassion …

Petitioner:   Sustaining God, Jesus through his suffering death shows us a new way of love and invites us to love one another as he loves us.  Plant this Word in our hearts, so that in its power and love, our love may not grow cold in your service, nor that we may be tempted to fail, deny, or leave you, but in faith, cling to the cross and its way to life.  O God in your compassion …

Pastor:  Gracious God, hear us as we pray.  As you have made us and redeemed us, so now sustain us with your hope, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

People:  Amen.

CLOSING HYMN

“Beneath the Cross of Jesus”

[click on the link below]

Beneath the cross of Jesus I long to take my stand;

the shadow of a might rock within a weary land,

a home within a wilderness, a rest upon the way,

from the burning of the noontide heat and burdens of the day.

Upon the cross of Jesus, my eye at times can see

the very dying form of one who suffered there for me.

And from my contrite heart, with tears, two wonders I confess:

the wonder of his glorious love and my unworthiness.

I take, O cross, your shadow for my abiding place;

I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of his face;

content to let the world go by, to know no gain nor loss,

my sinful self my only shame, my glory all, the cross.

Saskatoon ELCIC 7 Churches Service For March 14th

From Pastor Hedlin:

On Sunday, March 14 we are live streaming our worship on YouTube. That has worked well for us and we hope it will be easy to access for all who tune in. If you instruct members to go to YouTube and use the search there to go to Trinity Lutheran Saskatoon it should bring you to the live stream broadcast and you should just have to click on it. We will have the pre-service open & accessible about 5-8 minutes before service starts (10:30 am)    We are holding our Annual Meeting after worship at 11:30 so we do not keep the live-stream going beyond the conclusion of worship. The service will be uploaded to our website very shortly after service ends and, typically, pretty quickly to the 7 congregation site as well.    Hope this all comes through!

KOG SERVICE FOR MARCH 7, 2021

Voice: We are possessed by demons.

All of us.

No matter how many times we pray,

they won’t go away completely.

Moods, habits, devilish desires

inhabit the regions of our hearts and minds

and break out suddenly, without explanation, without warning,

taking us over,

making us someone we would rather not be,

someone we really are not.

All: We are obsessed with demons,

surrounded daily by demonic forces:

drink, drugs, consumerism,

money, power, possessing as much as we can;

they are taking control of our neighborhoods,

trying to break down the doors of our homes

and all too often breaking our hearts and our lives.

Voice: Have mercy on me, O God,

according to your steadfast love;

according to your abundant mercy

blot out my transgressions.

All: Amen.

GATHERING

WE RESPOND TO GOD’S CALL WITH PRAISE AND PRAYER,

Pastor: Let us pray:

People: Holy God, through your Son you have called us to live faithfully and act courageously.  Keep us steadfast in your covenant of grace, and teach us the wisdom that comes only through Jesus Christ our Saviour and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.   Amen.

WORD

THE CHURCH HEARS THE GOOD NEWS OF GOD ACTING
IN THIS AND EVERY TIME AND PLACE

FIRST READING  Exodus 20:1-17

Then God spoke all these words:

I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before me.

You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me, but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.

You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name.

Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. For six days you shall labour and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work—you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it.

Honour your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

You shall not murder.

You shall not commit adultery.

You shall not steal.

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.

You shall not covet your neighbour’s house; you shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbour.

SECOND READING  1 Corinthians 1:18-25

For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written,
‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
   and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.’
Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling-block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.

THE GOSPEL

Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St.________, the _________ chapter.

People: Glory to you, O Lord.

John 2: 13-22

The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money-changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, ‘Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father’s house a market-place!’ His disciples remembered that it was written, ‘Zeal for your house will consume me.’ The Jews then said to him, ‘What sign can you show us for doing this?’ Jesus answered them, ‘Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.’ The Jews then said, ‘This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?’ But he was speaking of the temple of his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

Pastor: The Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise to you, O Christ.

HYMN OF THE DAY

“All My Hope On God Is Founded”

[click on the link below]

All my hope on God is founded

who will all my trust renew,

who through change and chance will guide me,

only good and only true.

God unknown,

God alone,

call my heart to be thine own.

Mortal pride and earthly glory,

sword and crown betray our trust;

what with care and toil we fashion,

tower and temple, fall to dust.

But thy power,

hour by hour,

is my temple and my tower.

Great thy goodness, ever enduring;

deep thy wisdom passing thought;

splendor, light, and life attend thee,

beauty springing out of naught.

Evermore

from thy store

newborn worlds rise and adore.

Still from earth to God eternal

sacrifice of praise be done,

high above all praises praising

for the gift of God’s own Son.

Christ doth call

one and all:

ye who follow shall not fall.

APOSTLES’ CREED

Pastor: Let us confess our faith in the words of the Apostles’ Creed.

All:       I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

              I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord.

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

      and the life everlasting. Amen.

Petitioner:  Merciful God, we sometimes doubt, often resist your desire to protect and to save us, and turn your foolishness of the cross into our foolish self-centredness, yet you persist with your cleansing word, baptism, and supper.  Sustain your people by your Spirit that our communities of faith do not become one more item in our cultural marketplace where access to you is limited, costly, manipulative, and marketed. Give us the boldness to follow your way of grace and love.   O God in your compassion …

Petitioner:  Righteous God, your ways are beyond human understanding.  Give those in positions of authority wisdom and compassion to be just stewards in caring for the poor, the unemployed, the homeless, the aged, infirm and disabled, and the environment, and to eliminate violence and oppression among all peoples and nations.  Restore your blessing of mercy, peace, and justice to all.  O God in your compassion …

Petitioner:  God of wisdom, you show us how to live in joy and peace. Whenever we make idols, misuse your name, break the sabbath, dishonour our parents, murder, commit adultery, bear false witness, and covet what is not our own, forgive our rebellious ways and create in us clean hearts. O God in your compassion …

Pastor:   Comforting God, hear the cries of the sick and dying, all who bear doubt and are in despair, the lost and forgotten, and those caught up in conflict, loss, or grief.  We remember especially before you ….  Bring healing and hope, love and compassion, faith and peace.  O God in your compassion …

Petitioner:  God of new life, you seek us in steadfast love. May your gracious intrusion in our daily lives be a calling to us to follow your willSend us out so that we may boldly spread the good news of new life in Jesus Christ and may be both a prophetic witness and a pastoral presence in a needy world.  O God in your compassion …

Petitioner:   Praiseworthy God, the earth, sea and sky are a temple of your creative love for all that is.   We pray for the care and protection of the earth and all its creatures.  We pray for wisdom, courage, and commitment to help cleanse your good creation, that clean water, air, land, and the fruits of the earth are available for future generations.  Fill all who hunger and thirst with good things, that we and your whole creation may be blessed.

“When I Survey the Wondrous Cross”

[click on the link below]

When I survey the wondrous cross

on which the prince of glory died,

my richest gain I count but loss

and pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast

save in the death of Christ, my God;

all the vain things that charm me most.

I sacrifice them to his blood.

See, from his head, his hands, his feet,

sorrow and love flow mingled down.

Did ever such love and sorrow meet,

or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine,

that were a present far too small;

love so amazing so divine,

demands my soul my life, my all.

Even though we are not meeting together we still have expenses and need your offerings so that we can pay them.  Church Council has decided that the best way to receive your offerings is that you mail a cheque (Please no cash for mail security reasons) to the church and we can process them from there.

Send your contributions to:  King of Glory Lutheran Church

Additional Prayers

Petitioner:  Generous God, fill us with compassion and concern for others, young and old, that we may look after one another in these challenging days. Bring healing to those who are sick with the virus and be with their families. Comfort the family and friends of those who have died. Strengthen and protect all medical professionals caring for the sick and all who work in our medical and health care facilities. Give wisdom to leaders in healthcare and governance that they may make the right decisions for the well-being of people.  We pray in gratitude for all those in our country who will continue to work in the days ahead in so many fields of life for the sake of us all. Bless them and keep them safe.  O God of creation and life, we place ourselves in your protection.  May the mantle of your peace enfold us this day and tomorrow.  Hear us, O God of life …
