The Fourth Sunday after Pentecost

JESUS, LIVING BREAD, RENEWING OUR HUNGRY WORLD
Pentecost begins with a rush–the rushing, life-giving wind of God’s Spirit. We also remember that Sunday is a day of rest. Rest is not meant to emphasize relaxation as much as it does renewal. The Church year season of Pentecost recognizes that God’s Spirit breathes into us life-giving re-creation. The readings for these months of Summer worship focus on who we are in Christ, what is the nature of faith, what is the living out of this faith, what the life of following Jesus is all about. The Bread of Life, like the manna in the wilderness, and like the bread on the Lord’s table, declares how near and involved our God actually is in our daily lives. Through Christ’s word and Spirit we have refreshment and renewal.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

WE REMEMBER OUR BAPTISMS, CONFESS OUR FAITHLESSNESS,
AND HEAR GOD’S FAITHFUL PROMISE OF FORGIVENESS

Pastor: Blessed be the holy Trinity:
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
who forgives all our sin,
whose mercy endures forever.

People: Amen.
Pastor: God of all mercy and consolation,
come to the aid of your people,
turning us from sin
to live for you alone.
Give us the power of your Holy Spirit
that, attentive to your Word,
we may confess our sins,
receive your forgiveness,
bear with one another in love,
maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace,
and grow into the fullness of your Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord.
People: Amen.
Pastor: Let us confess our sin in the
presence of God and of one another.
 Reconciling God,
People: you seek peace and unity among us,
but too often we choose walls of isolation.
You seek to be one with your creation,
but we turn away your loving Spirit.
In your forgiving love,
break down the barriers we create,
that we might see more clearly your love for us,
be reconciled with our neighbour,
and trust more deeply your promise of eternal life. Amen.
Pastor: We who once were far off
have been brought near to God
through the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and by the power of the Holy Spirit.
May our all-loving God through the Holy Spirit
grant you grace to forgive one another
as God in Christ has forgiven you.
People: Amen.

GREETING
Pastor: The steadfast love of God never ceases.
People: God’s mercies never come to an end.
Pastor: The steadfast love of God,
the blessing of the Father,
the glorious grace freely bestowed in the Son,
and the power of the promised Holy Spirit be with you all.

People: And also with you

PRAYER OF THE DAY
O God, you direct our lives by your grace, and your words of justice and mercy reshape the world. Mold us into a people who welcome your word and serve one another, through Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord. Amen.

First Reading Romans 6:12-23
Therefore, do not let sin exercise dominion in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. No longer present your members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and present your members to God as instruments of righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that you, having once been slaves of sin, have become obedient from the heart to the form of teaching to which you were entrusted, and that you, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness for sanctification.
When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. So what advantage did you then get from the things of which you now are ashamed? The end of those things is death. But now that you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, the advantage you get is sanctification. The end is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Gospel Reading Matthew 10:40-42
Welcoming
‘Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous; and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple—truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.’

PRAYER OF THE DAY
Teach us, good Lord God, to serve you as you deserve, to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labour and not to ask for reward, except that of knowing that we do your will, through Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord. Amen.

First Reading Genesis 21:8-21 Hagar and Ishmael Sent Away
The child grew, and was weaned; and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, playing with her son Isaac. So she said to Abraham, ‘Cast out this slave woman with her son; for the son of this slave woman shall not inherit along with my son Isaac.’ The matter was very distressing to Abraham on account of his son. But God said to Abraham, ‘Do not be distressed because of the boy and because of your slave woman; whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, for it is through Isaac that offspring shall be named after you. As for the son of the slave woman, I will make a nation of him also, because he is your offspring.’ So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and a skin of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, along with the child, and sent her away. And she departed, and wandered about in the wilderness of Beer-sheba.
When the water in the skin was gone, she cast the child under one of the bushes. Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot; for she said, ‘Do not let me look on the death of the child.’ And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept. And God heard the voice of the boy; and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, and said to her, ‘What troubles you, Hagar? Do not be afraid; for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is. Come, lift up the boy and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make a great nation of him.’ Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. She went, and filled the skin with water, and gave the boy a drink.
God was with the boy, and he grew up; he lived in the wilderness, and became an expert with the bow. He lived in the wilderness of Paran; and his mother got a wife for him from the land of Egypt.

Second Reading Romans 6:1b-11 Dying and Rising with Christ
What then are we to say? Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For whoever has died is freed from sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Gospel Reading Matthew 10:24-39
‘A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master; it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household!
‘So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops. Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground unperceived by your Father. And even the hairs of your head are all counted. So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.
‘Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven; but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father in heaven.
‘Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.
For I have come to set a man against his father,
and a daughter against her mother,
and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
and one’s foes will be members of one’s own household.
Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.

Matthew 28:16-20
The Commissioning of the Disciples
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE OF FAITH
[The congregational response after each petition is: “COMPLETE YOUR NEW CREATION.”]
Pastor: As we celebrate the joy of the resurrection, let us pray for God’s continuing work of new creation in the life of the Church, for the peace and well-being of the world, and wherever brokenness and death oppose God’s abundant life, saying, “Hear us, O God of life,” and responding, “Complete your new creation.”

Petitioner: God of promise, the power and mystery of your presence as trinity graces our lives with hope and renewal. Open us up to the challenges you place before us and all your people, fill us with your Spirit, and help us to be your presence of love and your witness of faithfulness in the world. Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner: God of all creation, you make, redeem, and sustain a world of awe, beauty and abundance. Inspire delight in the furry, scaly, watery, breezy, sandy stuff you love. Shelter all life and habitat that endure devastating effects from our pollution of water, air and land. Provide for all people whose livelihood depends upon clean water and air and fertile soil. Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner: God of hope, in spite of all we have heard and all that we have seen we forget where healing comes from, forget who binds all together as family, forget that life in Christ is completely different. Through touching the water of baptism, hearing the Word of forgiveness, tasting the goodness of your life-giving meal, help us remember that we have a God of truth, a Triune God, who graciously creates, redeems and sustains all creation, and whose steadfast love for us is certain and assured. Hear us, O God of life….

Pastor: God of healing, when adversity and sorrow wounds faith, in our weakness we know not how to pray. Intercede for us, bringing hope to the sorrowful, fearful, and anxious, and healing to those who are suffering or ill. We remember especially before you …. Bring an end to pain, loss, brokenness, and sorrow. Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner: God of peace, protect and lead your world through these breathless times wracked with trouble, violence, and distress. We remember especially those throughout the world and in our nation who suffer from racism and injustice and all who suffer in the face of oppression, persecution, and violence. Help leaders and citizens use political power to draw us together in our common humanity that your desire for peace and life may be known in every time and place. Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner: God of life, through your revelation to us as Trinity you call us into a love that exceeds our understanding or desire. As Trinity you model the way of living together as a community of unconditional love. Make us and all your people into a church community which abides in this trinitarian love and embodies this perfect love in an imperfect world. Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner: Generous God, fill us with compassion and concern for others, young and old, that we may look after one another in these challenging days. Bring healing to those who are sick with the virus and be with their families. Comfort the family and friends of those who have died. Strengthen and protect all medical professionals caring for the sick and all who work in our medical and health care facilities. Give wisdom to leaders in healthcare and governance that they may make the right decisions for the well-being of people. We pray in gratitude for all those in our country who will continue to work in the days ahead in so many fields of life for the sake of us all. Bless them and keep them safe. O God of creation and life, we place ourselves in your protection. May the mantle of your peace enfold us this day and tomorrow. Hear us, O God of life …

Petitioner: God of mission, you have redeemed and anointed your people through baptism and united us in the death and resurrection of Jesus for a life-giving mission. Remind us of promise and possibilities, of failure and forgiveness, of doubt and faith as through you, our Triune God, we seek to build a community of faith, hope, and love. Send your Spirit of wisdom, guidance, and courage, renew our ministries and our callings, and make our joy in you complete. Hear us, O God of life…

Pastor: Sustaining God, as you bring life even out of death, hear our call for your abundant life, make our prayers part of your new creation, and guide us with the hope of joy in your presence for the sake of the crucified and risen one, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

People: Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Pastor: Let us pray with confidence in the words our Saviour gave us:

People: Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those
who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and forever. Amen.
