All Saints’ Sunday
Gathered In To Be Called Out
Pentecost begins with a rush–the rushing, life-giving wind of God’s Spirit. Now the latter part of the season of Pentecost centers on the lush green of growth and glorious yellow of harvest. We are constantly reminded that God has inexorably linked the experience of grace to the life and work of human beings. It is ordinary for the community of faith to be about the work of God’s reign. It is extraordinary that this labor bears the very power of the cross and resurrection. This part of the Pentecost season pushes us to see our work as sacramental, an incarnational expression of Christ’s own life, death, and resurrection.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
We remember our baptisms, confess our faithlessness,
and hear God’s faithful promise of forgiveness
Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen.
Pastor: Before God, our rock, our refuge, and our dwelling place,
let us confess our sin.
Silence for reflection and self-examination.
Most Holy and Most Merciful God,
People: you know our failings better than we do.
Some of our sins we know —
the thoughts and words and deeds
against our sisters and brothers.
We are more ready to be forgiven than to forgive others.
Turn us again toward you and toward others.
Guide us again to the water of life,
and renew in us the grace of baptism,
that we may live for you and die in you,
for the sake and in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Pastor: You are all children of God.
In the mercy of almighty God,
Jesus Christ was given to die for you,
and through Christ God forgives you all your sin.
With all the faithful in heaven and on earth,
rejoice and be glad,
your sins are forgiven!
People: Amen.
GATHERING
WE RESPOND TO GOD’S CALL WITH PRAISE AND PRAYER,
AND PREPARE TO HEAR GOD’S WORD OF LIFE
GREETING
Pastor: The grace given to us in Christ Jesus, the rich presence of the Holy Spirit living in us, and the power of God who calls us with a holy calling be with you all.
People: And also with you.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Almighty God, you have knit your people together in one communion in the mystical body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Grant us grace to follow your blessed saints in lives of faith and commitment, and to know the inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who love you, through Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
First Reading
Isaiah 25:6-9
On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples
a feast of rich food, a feast of well-matured wines,
of rich food filled with marrow, of well-matured wines strained clear.
And he will destroy on this mountain
the shroud that is cast over all peoples,
the sheet that is spread over all nations;
he will swallow up death for ever.
Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces,
and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth,
for the Lord has spoken.
It will be said on that day,
Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us.
This is the Lord for whom we have waited;
let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.
Second Reading
Revelation 21:1-6a
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,
‘See, the home of God is among mortals.
He will dwell with them;
they will be his peoples,
and God himself will be with them;
he will wipe every tear from their eyes.
Death will be no more;
mourning and crying and pain will be no more,
for the first things have passed away.’
And the one who was seated on the throne said, ‘See, I am making all things new.’ Also he said, ‘Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.’ Then he said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life.
Gospel Reading John 11:32-44 When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.’ When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, ‘Where have you laid him?’ They said to him, ‘Lord, come and see.’ Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, ‘See how he loved him!’ But some of them said, ‘Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?’
Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, ‘Take away the stone.’ Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, ‘Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead for four days.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?’ So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upwards and said, ‘Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.’ When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out!’ The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, ‘Unbind him, and let him go.’

HYMN OF THE DAY
“For All Your Saints, O Lord”
NICENE CREED (recited on festival Sundays)
Pastor: Let us confess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed.
All: We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven;
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified.
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Remembering and Honouring All the Saints
Pastor:The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all!
People: And also with you!
Pastor: Let us pray together. Lord God, by your grace we are running a race.
People: We are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses–
Pastor:Patriarchs and matriarchs, prophets and psalmists, disciples and evangelists, martyrs and saints.
People: We thank you for their example. We praise you for their lives of faith. For all your saints, O Lord, who strove in you to live, who followed, obeyed, adored you – our grateful hymn we sing.
Pastor:Lord God, by your grace we are running a race.
People: We are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses–
Pastor:Loved ones now resting in you, who guided us, nurtured and cared for us; ancestors who worked and traveled, lived and died that we might be who we are, where we are–your precious children in this community of believers.
People: We thank you for their example. We praise you for their lives of faith. For all your saints, O Lord, who strove in you to die, who counted you their great reward – accept our thankful cry.
Pastor:Lord God, by your grace we are running a race.
People: We are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses–
Pastor:Family members and members of this congregation; fellow believers in every country, every denomination; friends who help, guide and uplift us– children of your family, sheep of your fold, saints of your redeeming.
People: We thank you for their example. We praise you for their lives of faith. For this, your name we bless, and humbly pray anew, that we like them in holiness may live and die in you.
Pastor:Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely,
People: and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us,
Pastor:looking to Christ, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.
People: Amen.
Pastor: Let us pray: Almighty God,
your people of all the ages live and praise you without ceasing.
In our communion with you, we have communion
with generations past and generations yet unborn.
Before your presence we are one
with a great multitude which no one could number,
and in praising you we join with those from every nation.
Grant to your church on earth
that as we celebrate the triumph of your saints in glory
we may profit by their example
and enter with them into the inexpressible joys
you have prepared for those who love you,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
People: Amen.
Pastor: We praise you, O God, and we especially honor the memory of those individuals of this congregation, their families, loved ones, and friends, who have lived among us and shared their faith in personal ways, who have finished the race and now reign on high with you. In addition O God, we honor the memory of those who have graced our lives at other times and in other ways – those whose names we lift up before you now. In particular, we lift up before you with gratitude and thanksgiving….

Pastor: God of life, we give you thanks for all those people, so very dear to us, whose loving presence here on earth is no more, yet who live a larger life hidden in Christ. O God of living love, from whom neither life nor death can separate those who trust in your love, and whose gentle power holds in its embrace your children both in this world and the next, so unite us to yourself that in fellowship with you we may always be united with our loved ones, whether here or there. Give us courage, constancy and hope; through him who died and was buried and rose again for us, Jesus Christ our Lord.
People: Amen

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE OF FAITH
[The congregational response after each petition is:“CAUSE YOUR FRUITS OF LOVE TO ABOUND.”]
Pastor: With confidence in God’s saving grace, let us pray to the Lord of the Harvest for the Church, the world, and the needs of all people everywhere, saying, “God, in your goodness,” and responding, “Cause your fruits of love to abound.”
Petitioner: Loving God, through the water of our baptism, through the nourishing food of your Supper, and through the power of your Word, bring your Word of Life to all who are struggling with situations that appear overwhelming, hopeless, and bound by death. Turn our mourning into dancing; enable us to see, hear, taste, and feel your presence in the midst of our trials. Help us remember that your word of resurrection is the last and lasting word. God, in your goodness…
Petitioner: God of justice and wisdom, we ask you to guide the leaders of our nation and all world leaders as they meet at COP26 to pass actions to address climate change and that they might work together for the justice, peace, health, and well-being of all people. God, in your goodness…
Petitioner: Sustaining God, the earth is yours and all that is in it. Nourish the earth and renew farmland that now lies fallow. Provide enough food and clean water for all that even barren wastelands can sustain life as you continue to bring new life out of death. Give us a renewed commitment to care for and to nurture your creation. God, in your goodness…
Pastor: God of healing, we pray for the sick, the desperate, the anxious, the depressed, for those who face constant pain or even death, for those in treatment for addiction or disease, and for those who mourn. We remember especially before you …. Wipe away the tears from their eyes. Give your shelter of compassion to all who call upon your name. God, in your goodness…
Petitioner: God of life everlasting, confound our ways of self-serving behaviour. Stir us to advocate for and to serve those forgotten saints who are cast aside by the world and who are most in need of care. Encourage partnerships among the people of faith to support food banks, clothing closets, homeless shelters, and ministries that lift up people who feel less than whole in any way. God, in your goodness …
Petitioner: Christ of mission, we pray for your Spirit as we count our days together in this community. Send your Spirit to renew us and remind us that you are making all things new. Give us hope to embrace one another with your love, that the bonds of community and service might be strengthened. Send us forth to persist faithfully with greetings of grace and peace on our lips that we might unbind all entombed in the ways of death to live their life in you. God, in your goodness…
Petitioner: Good and gracious God, we thank and praise you for the faithful witness of all your saints, especially those who have died and are dear to us. Help us also to be faithful to you, that we might live out our baptism as saints in this world. God, in your goodness…
Pastor: Empowering God, your gracious Spirit intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words. Keep us in the faith, call, gather, and enlighten us with your Word, search our hearts and renew our lives to live according to your will; through Jesus Christ our living Lord.
People: Amen.
THE GREETING AND SHARING OF PEACE
Pastor: The peace of Christ be with you always.
People: And also with you.
(The congregation greets one another with a gesture of peace, using these or similar words:
“Christ’s peace be with you.”)
THE OFFERING
(We worship God with the offering of our selves, our time, our talents, and our possessions.)
OFFERTORY PRAYER
Pastor:: Let us pray.
God of harvest,
People: to your table we bring wine and bread,
and gifts from the labor of our hands.
Receive the offering of our lives,
and feed us with your living bread from heaven,
that our lives may proclaim your care for all creation,
and that we may serve others in your name;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Pastor: Let us pray with confidence in the words our Saviour gave us:
People: Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those
who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and forever. Amen.
BENEDICTION
Pastor: Almighty God,
who makes all things new in Jesus Christ,
uphold you by the Spirit in times of trial,
and give you peace, now, and always.
People: Amen.
