KOG SERVICE FOR SUNDAY, JUNE 27, 2021

The Fifth Sunday after Pentecost

JESUS, LIVING BREAD, RENEWING OUR HUNGRY WORLD

Pentecost begins with a rush–the rushing, life-giving wind of God’s Spirit. We also remember that Sunday is  a day of rest. Rest is not meant to emphasize relaxation as much as it does renewal. The Church year season of Pentecost recognizes that God’s Spirit breathes into us life-giving re-creation. The readings for these months of Summer worship focus on who we are in Christ, what is the nature of faith, what is  the living out of this faith, what the life of following Jesus is all  about.  The Bread of Life, like the manna in the wilderness, and like the bread on the Lord’s table, declares how near and involved our God actually is in our daily lives.  Through Christ’s word and Spirit we have refreshment and renewal.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

WE REMEMBER OUR BAPTISMS, CONFESS OUR FAITHLESSNESS,

AND HEAR GOD’S FAITHFUL PROMISE OF FORGIVENESS

Pastor:  Blessed be the holy Trinity:

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

who forgives all our sin,

whose mercy endures forever.

People:  Amen.

Pastor: God of all mercy and consolation,

come to the aid of your people,

turning us from sin

to live for you alone.

Give us the power of your Holy Spirit

that, attentive to your Word,

we may confess our sins,

receive your forgiveness,

bear with one another in love,

maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace,

and grow into the fullness of your Son,

Jesus Christ our Lord.

People: Amen.

Pastor: Let us confess our sin in the

presence of God and of one another.  Reconciling God,                                                                                    People: you seek peace and unity among us,                                                           but too often we choose walls of isolation.                                     You seek to be one with your creation,                                             but we turn away your loving Spirit.                                                  In your forgiving love,                                                                         break down the barriers we create,                                                    that we might see more clearly your love for us,                                         be reconciled with our neighbour,                                                      and trust more deeply your promise of eternal life.  Amen.

Pastor: We who once were far off

have been brought near to God

through the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,

and by the power of the Holy Spirit.

May our all-loving God through the Holy Spirit

grant you grace to forgive one another

as God in Christ has forgiven you.

People: Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Almighty and merciful God, we implore you to hear the prayers of your people.  Be our strong defense against all harm and danger, that we may live and grow in faith and hope,  through Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord. Amen.

First Reading

2 Samuel 1: 17-27

David intoned this lamentation over Saul and his son Jonathan. (He ordered that The Song of the Bow be taught to the people of Judah; it is written in the Book of Jashar.) He said:
Your glory, O Israel, lies slain upon your high places!
   How the mighty have fallen!
Tell it not in Gath,
   proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon;
or the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice,
   the daughters of the uncircumcised will exult.

You mountains of Gilboa,
   let there be no dew or rain upon you,
   nor bounteous fields!
For there the shield of the mighty was defiled,
   the shield of Saul, anointed with oil no more.

From the blood of the slain,
   from the fat of the mighty,
the bow of Jonathan did not turn back,
   nor the sword of Saul return empty.

Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely!
   In life and in death they were not divided;
they were swifter than eagles,
   they were stronger than lions.

O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,
   who clothed you with crimson, in luxury,
   who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.

How the mighty have fallen
   in the midst of the battle!

Jonathan lies slain upon your high places.
   I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan;
greatly beloved were you to me;
   your love to me was wonderful,
   passing the love of women.

How the mighty have fallen,
   and the weapons of war perished!

Second Reading                                                                                              2 Corinthians 8:7-15                                                                                                        Now as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our love for you—so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking.

I do not say this as a command, but I am testing the genuineness of your love against the earnestness of others. For you know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. And in this matter I am giving my advice: it is appropriate for you who began last year not only to do something but even to desire to do something— now finish doing it, so that your eagerness may be matched by completing it according to your means. For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has—not according to what one does not have. I do not mean that there should be relief for others and pressure on you, but it is a question of a fair balance between your present abundance and their need, so that their abundance may be for your need, in order that there may be a fair balance. As it is written,
‘The one who had much did not have too much,
   and the one who had little did not have too little.’

Gospel Reading                                                                                         Mark 5:21-43                                                                                                                     When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered round him; and he was by the lake. Then one of the leaders of the synagogue named Jairus came and, when he saw him, fell at his feet and begged him repeatedly, ‘My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and live.’ So he went with him.

And a large crowd followed him and pressed in on him. Now there was a woman who had been suffering from haemorrhages for twelve years. She had endured much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had; and she was no better, but rather grew worse. She had heard about Jesus, and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, for she said, ‘If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well.’ Immediately her haemorrhage stopped; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. Immediately aware that power had gone forth from him, Jesus turned about in the crowd and said, ‘Who touched my clothes?’ And his disciples said to him, ‘You see the crowd pressing in on you; how can you say, “Who touched me?” ’ He looked all round to see who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before him, and told him the whole truth. He said to her, ‘Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.’

While he was still speaking, some people came from the leader’s house to say, ‘Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further?’ But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the leader of the synagogue, ‘Do not fear, only believe.’ He allowed no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. When they came to the house of the leader of the synagogue, he saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. When he had entered, he said to them, ‘Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping.’ And they laughed at him. Then he put them all outside, and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was. He took her by the hand and said to her, ‘Talitha cum’, which means, ‘Little girl, get up!’ And immediately the girl got up and began to walk about (she was twelve years of age). At this they were overcome with amazement. He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.

CLOSING HYMN

“Lord, Whose Love In Humble Service”

[click on the link below]

Lord, whose love in humble service

bore the weight of human need,

who upon the cross forsaken,

worked your mercy’s perfect deed:

we, your servants, bring the worship

not of voice alone, but heart;

consecrating to your purpose

every gift which you impart.

Still your children wander homeless;

still the hungry cry for bread;

still the captives long for freedom;

still in grief we mourn our dead.

As you, Lord, in deep compassion

healed the sick and freed the soul,

by your Spirit send your power

to our world to make it whole.

As we worship, grant us vision,

till your love’s revealing light

in its height and depth and greatness

dawns upon our quickened sight,

making known the needs and burdens

your compassion bids us bear,

stirring us to ardent service,

your abundant life to share.

Called by worship to your service,

forth in your dear name we go,

to the child, the youth, the aged,

love in living deeds to show;

hope and health, good-will and comfort,

counsel, aid, and peace we give,

that your servants, Lord, in freedom

may your mercy know and live.

HOLDEN EVENING PRAYER

[click on the link below]

Listen through the Magnificat.  It ends at 10:40

PRAYER OF THE DAY

O God of creation, eternal majesty, you preside over land and sea, sunshine and storm.  By your strength pilot us, by your power preserve us, by your wisdom instruct us, and by your hand protect us, through Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord. Amen.

First Reading

1 Samuel 17: 32-49

David said to Saul, ‘Let no one’s heart fail because of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.’ Saul said to David, ‘You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are just a boy, and he has been a warrior from his youth.’ But David said to Saul, ‘Your servant used to keep sheep for his father; and whenever a lion or a bear came, and took a lamb from the flock, I went after it and struck it down, rescuing the lamb from its mouth; and if it turned against me, I would catch it by the jaw, strike it down, and kill it. Your servant has killed both lions and bears; and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, since he has defied the armies of the living God.’ David said, ‘The Lord, who saved me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, will save me from the hand of this Philistine.’ So Saul said to David, ‘Go, and may the Lord be with you!’

Saul clothed David with his armour; he put a bronze helmet on his head and clothed him with a coat of mail. David strapped Saul’s sword over the armour, and he tried in vain to walk, for he was not used to them. Then David said to Saul, ‘I cannot walk with these; for I am not used to them.’ So David removed them. Then he took his staff in his hand, and chose five smooth stones from the wadi, and put them in his shepherd’s bag, in the pouch; his sling was in his hand, and he drew near to the Philistine.

The Philistine came on and drew near to David, with his shield-bearer in front of him. When the Philistine looked and saw David, he disdained him, for he was only a youth, ruddy and handsome in appearance. The Philistine said to David, ‘Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?’ And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. The Philistine said to David, ‘Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and to the wild animals of the field.’ But David said to the Philistine, ‘You come to me with sword and spear and javelin; but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This very day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head; and I will give the dead bodies of the Philistine army this very day to the birds of the air and to the wild animals of the earth, so that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, and that all this assembly may know that the Lord does not save by sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s and he will give you into our hand.’

When the Philistine drew nearer to meet David, David ran quickly towards the battle line to meet the Philistine. David put his hand in his bag, took out a stone, slung it, and struck the Philistine on his forehead; the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell face down on the ground.

Second Reading                                                                                              2 Corinthians 6:1-13                                                                                                        As we work together with him, we urge you also not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says,
‘At an acceptable time I have listened to you,
   and on a day of salvation I have helped you.’
See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation! We are putting no obstacle in anyone’s way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we have commended ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, riots, labours, sleepless nights, hunger; by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, holiness of spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honour and dishonour, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet are well known; as dying, and see—we are alive; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything.

We have spoken frankly to you Corinthians; our heart is wide open to you. There is no restriction in our affections, but only in yours. In return—I speak as to children—open wide your hearts also.

Gospel Reading                                                                                         Mark 4:35-41                                                                                                                     On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, ‘Let us go across to the other side.’ And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. A great gale arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, ‘Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?’ He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. He said to them, ‘Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?’ And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, ‘Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?’

HYMN OF THE DAY

“When Peace Like A River”

[click on the link below]

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,

When sorrows like sea billows roll;

Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,

It is well, it is well, with my soul.

It is well, with my soul,

It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,

Let this blest assurance control,

That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,

And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

It is well, with my soul,

It is well, it is well, with my soul.

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!

My sin, not in part but the whole,

Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

It is well, with my soul,

It is well, it is well, with my soul.

And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,

The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;

The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,

Even so, it is well with my soul.

It is well, with my soul,

It is well, it is well, with my soul.

CLOSING HYMN

“Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me”

[click on the link below]

Jesus, Savior, pilot me,

Over life’s tempestuous sea;

Unknown waves before me roll,

Hiding rock and treach’rous shoal;

Chart and compass come from Thee:

Jesus, Savior, pilot me.

As a mother stills her child,

Thou canst hush the ocean wild;

Boist’rous waves obey Thy will

When Thou say’st to them, “Be still!”

Wondrous Sov’reign of the sea,

Jesus, Savior, pilot me.

When at last I reach the shore,

And the fearful breakers roar

‘Twixt me and the peaceful rest,

Then, while leaning on Thy breast,

May I hear Thee say to me,

“Fear not, I will pilot thee.”

DISMISSAL

Pastor: Go in peace, renewed with Christ’s Spirit to love and to serve.

People: Thanks be to God.

Co-Treasurer position for King of Glory

King of Glory is looking for a co-treasurer primarily responsible for documenting and filling out the forms for the province, the Canada Revenue Agency and the ELCiC.  They will work with Pat Sarich whose primary responsibility is oversight of the budget and the bookkeeping with respect of receipts and expenditures.  Please contact Pastor Michael about this position.

Dear Michael,

Even after everything we have seen this past year, I am sure you are just as shaken as I am by the news reports coming from India — they are truly upsetting and the situation is urgent.

I’m writing today to ask you to stand with the people of India as they face a fight against COVID-19 that goes beyond anything the world has seen to date.

The number of cases of COVID-19 in India has surpassed 20 million and the death toll has passed 200,000. The deadly surge in infections is overwhelming health services across the country, leading to a lack of beds, healthcare personnel, and oxygen. The wave of critical illness, coupled with lockdowns and curfews, is having a serious impact on livelihoods and food security across the country.

Millions are grieving, and it’s rapidly getting worse.

As the devastation brought on by the second wave of COVID-19 continues to unfold in India, CLWR is joining leading Canadian aid agencies – through the Humanitarian Coalition – in launching an appeal to raise funds and rush emergency assistance to people in need.

Humanitarian Coalition members are already actively responding to the crisis by supporting the healthcare system with oxygen, ventilators, field hospitals and PPE, promoting COVID vaccination and safe hygiene practices, and ensuring food security and basic survival for vulnerable families.

As a member of ACT Alliance, we have local partners in India who are prepared to respond immediately, but only with your help. You can make a difference — your donation will help provide emergency medical support to those forced to be sick at home, ensure access to vaccines and medical supplies for the most vulnerable, and support critical advocacy and public awareness efforts to keep as many people safe as possible.

Together, we have an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those who are suffering.

Will you give today? You can make a donation online now at clwr.org/India — it’s immediate, convenient and secure.

Donations can also be made by phoning our office at 1-800-661-2597 (Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. CDT), or by mailing a cheque to 600-177 Lombard Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3B 0W5.

Thank you for responding with compassion, and for your partnership.

Many blessings,

Additional Prayers

Petitioner:  Generous God, fill us with compassion and concern for others, young and old, that we may look after one another in these challenging days. Bring healing to those who are sick with the virus and be with their families. Comfort the family and friends of those who have died. Strengthen and protect all medical professionals caring for the sick and all who work in our medical and health care facilities. Give wisdom to leaders in healthcare and governance that they may make the right decisions for the well-being of people.  We pray in gratitude for all those in our country who will continue to work in the days ahead in so many fields of life for the sake of us all. Bless them and keep them safe.  O God of creation and life, we place ourselves in your protection.  May the mantle of your peace enfold us this day and tomorrow.  Hear us, O God of life …

Prelude

WORDS OF WELCOME

Silent Reflection/ ‘Amazing Grace’ (instrumental)

call to worship

Pastor: Jesus said the Kingdom of God is like a mustard seed; it starts out as a small thing, but it grows and grows until it gives a home to the birds of the air.                                               People: Can we believe a new day is coming? As surely as the sun rises over the horizon God is creating a new world.                                                                                                                                       Pastor: Jesus said the Kingdom of God is like someone who casting seed on the ground, and then sleeps and wakes, day after day, while the earth produces the fruit from the seed that was cast.                                                                                                     People: We do not always know how God works, but we trust that God does. And we know we are partners in that work.                                                                                    Pastor: Praise to Lord, the Almighty, who still cares for the world!                             People: Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, who leads with power and grace.

Hymn: ‘Praise to the Lord, the Almighty’     ELW 858 GREETING                                                                                                                        The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.                                                                                                     And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray…

O God, you are the tree of life, offering shelter to all the world. Graft us into yourself and nurture our growth, that we may bear your truth and love to those in need, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.  Amen.

FIRST READING: EZEKIEL 17:22-24

A reading from Ezekiel…

22 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will take a branch from the top of a tall cedar, and I will plant it on the top of Israel’s highest mountain. 23 It will become a majestic cedar, sending forth its branches and producing seed. Birds of every sort will nest in it, finding shelter in the shade of its branches. 24 And all the trees will know that it is I, the Lord, who cuts the tall tree down and makes the short tree grow tall. It is I who makes the green tree wither and gives the dead tree new life. I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will do what I said!”

Word of God, word of life.  Thanks be to God.

PSALM: Psalm 92:1-4, 12-15

1It is a good thing to give thanks to the Lord,
  to sing praise to your name, O Most High;
2to herald your love in the morning
  and your faithfulness at night;
3on the psaltery, and on the lyre,
  and to the melody of the harp.
4For you have made me glad by your acts, O Lord;
  and I shout for joy because of the works of your hands.
12The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree,
  and shall spread abroad like a cedar of Lebanon.
13Those who are planted in the house of the Lord
  shall flourish in the courts |of our God;
14they shall still bear fruit in old age;
  they shall be green and succulent;
15that they may show how upright the Lord is,
  my rock, in whom there is no injustice.

goSPEL: MARK 4:26-34

The holy gospel according to Mark, the 4th chapter…

Glory to you, O Lord.                                                                                                        26 Jesus also said, “The Kingdom of God is like a farmer who scatters seed on the ground. 27 Night and day, while he is asleep or awake, the seed sprouts and grows, but he does not understand how it happens. 28 The earth produces the crops on its own. First a leaf blade pushes through, then the heads of wheat are formed, and finally the grain ripens. 29 And as soon as the grain is ready, the farmer comes and harvests it with a sickle, for the harvest time has come.”                                                                     30 Jesus said, “How can I describe the Kingdom of God? What story should I use to illustrate it? 31 It is like a mustard seed planted in the ground. It is the smallest of all seeds, 32 but it becomes the largest of all garden plants; it grows long branches, and birds can make nests in its shade.”                                                                                                   33 Jesus used many similar stories and illustrations to teach the people as much as they could understand. 34 In fact, in his public ministry he never taught without using parables; but afterward, when he was alone with his disciples, he explained everything to them.

The gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

Let us come before the triune God in prayer.

Holy God, you plant the seeds of faith in every nation. Enliven your church, so that the good news of your grace may take root and grow throughout the world. Lord, in your mercy,

hear our prayer.

Creator, even the trees, shrubs, and flowers delight in your goodness. From the depths of the soil to the highest mountain, bring forth new plants. Restore growth to places suffering drought. We pray for our farmers who are in the season of seeding.  Bless their work and keep them safe.  Lord, in your mercy,

hear our prayer.

Judge of nations, we pray for our leaders and those in power. Grant them the ability to regard those under their charge with humility, dedicating their lives in service to others. Lord, in your mercy,

hear our prayer.

Divine comforter, you show compassion to those in need and provide relief to those who call on you. Bless all who suffer, especially people trapped in cycles of poverty and homelessness. We pray for those in our community in their times of need.  This morning we remember Loraine, Jo-Ann, Sarah, Lydia, Bill, Kaitlin, Elroy, Vera, George, Virginia, Renato and family, Sydney, Dick, Barb, Stacie.  We also pray for those in specific need within the communities of Augustana, Resurrection, Good Shepherd, Zion, Trinity, and King of Glory.  May those we hold in hearts be touched by your healing presence. Lord, in your mercy,

hear our prayer.

Loving healer, we give thanks for all those who have taken time to prepare themselves to be Stephen Ministers in our communities.  We pray for Marilyn, Wilbur, Karen, Frank, Don, Adeline, Elaine, and Ali.  Bless them in the care they give to others in time of need.  May their presence and compassion be reminders of the hope we all share in You.  Lord, in your mercy,

hear our prayer.

Sovereign God, this house of worship belongs to you. We give thanks and pray for our church musicians. We dedicate to you the joyful noise that comes from this place: the melody of voices and instruments and the songs that radiate from our hearts. May the joy of the Lord be our strength.  Lord, in your mercy,

hear our prayer.

Eternal God, we give thanks for our ancestors in the faith who are now at home with you. We remember those who have touched our lives in profound ways and who have left an indelible imprint on our lives.  We look forward to that day when all your people are reunited in your new creation and gathered around your table of grace.  Lord, in your mercy,

hear our prayer.

We lift our prayers to you, O God, trusting in your constant provision.

Amen.

KOG SERVICE FOR FOR SUNDAY JUNE 6, 2021

The Second Sunday after Pentecost

HOLDEN EVENING PRAYER

[click on the link below]

Listen through the Magnificat.  It ends at 10:40

PRAYER OF THE DAY

All powerful God, in Jesus Christ you turned death into life and defeat into victory.  Increase our faith and trust in him, that we may triumph over all evil in the strength of the same Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord. Amen.

First Reading

1 Samuel 8:4-20

Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah, and said to him, ‘You are old and your sons do not follow in your ways; appoint for us, then, a king to govern us, like other nations.’ But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, ‘Give us a king to govern us.’ Samuel prayed to the Lord, and the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them. Just as they have done to me, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so also they are doing to you. Now then, listen to their voice; only—you shall solemnly warn them, and show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them.’

So Samuel reported all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking him for a king. He said, ‘These will be the ways of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horsemen, and to run before his chariots; and he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and some to plough his ground and to reap his harvest, and to make his implements of war and the equipment of his chariots. He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive orchards and give them to his courtiers. He will take one-tenth of your grain and of your vineyards and give it to his officers and his courtiers. He will take your male and female slaves, and the best of your cattle and donkeys, and put them to his work. He will take one-tenth of your flocks, and you shall be his slaves. And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves; but the Lord will not answer you in that day.’

But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; they said, ‘No! but we are determined to have a king over us, so that we also may be like other nations, and that our king may govern us and go out before us and fight our battles.’

Second Reading                                                                                              2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1

But just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture—‘I believed, and so I spoke’—we also believe, and so we speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with you into his presence. Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.

For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

Gospel Reading                                                                                         Mark 3:20-35

and the crowd came together again, so that they could not even eat. When his family heard it, they went out to restrain him, for people were saying, ‘He has gone out of his mind.’ And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, ‘He has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the demons he casts out demons.’ And he called them to him, and spoke to them in parables, ‘How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered.

‘Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin’— for they had said, ‘He has an unclean spirit.’

Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside, they sent to him and called him. A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, ‘Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you.’ And he replied, ‘Who are my mother and my brothers?’ And looking at those who sat around him, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.’

Rise, shine, you people!  Christ the Lord has entered

our human story; God in him is centered.

now are forgiven.

Come, celebrate; your banners high unfurling,

your songs and prayers against the darkness hurling.

To all the world go out and tell the story

of Jesus’ glory.

Tell how the Father sent the Son to save us.

Tell of the Son, who life and freedom gave us.

Tell how the spirit calls from every nation

KOG SERVICE FOR MAY 30, 2021

 Now the Feast and Celebration

Easter, the resurrection of the crucified Jesus, is one single celebration which lasts for fifty days.  Each Sunday of Easter—from the Resurrection to Pentecost—celebrates the resurrection, the appearances, acknowledgment of Jesus as Lord, the community’s experience of the risen Lord, Christ’s mission to the disciples, and the promise of the Spirit.  This fifty-day long celebration testifies to the truth that the last word and the lasting word is not death, but God’s Word of life.

Anthem for The Day of Pentecost:

“Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty”

[click on the link below]

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!

Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;

Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!

God in three Persons, blessèd Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee,

Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;

Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,

Which wert and art, and evermore shall be.

Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide Thee,

Though the eye of sinfulness Thy glory may not see;

Only Thou art holy, there is none beside Thee,

Perfect in power, in love and purity.

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty!

All Thy works shall praise Thy name, in earth, in sky, and sea:

Holy, holy, holy! – merciful and mighty!

God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

FIRST READING

Isaiah 6:1-8

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said:
‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory.’
The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. And I said: ‘Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!’

Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: ‘Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.’ Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I; send me!’

SECOND READING

Romans 8:12-17

So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

THE GOSPEL

Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St.________, the _________ chapter.

People: Glory to you, O Lord.

Pastor: The Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise to you, O Christ.

GOSPEL READING

John 3:1-17

Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, ‘Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God.’ Jesus answered him, ‘Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.’ Nicodemus said to him, ‘How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be born?’ Jesus answered, ‘Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, “You must be born from above.” The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.’ Nicodemus said to him, ‘How can these things be?’ Jesus answered him, ‘Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?

‘Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.

‘Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

HYMN OF THE DAY

“Come, Join the Dance of Trinity”

[click on the link below]

Come, join the dance of Trinity,

before all worlds begun-

the interweaving of the three,

the Father, Spirit, Son.

The universe of space and time

did not arise by chance,

but as the Three, in love and hope,

made room within their dance.

Come, see the face of Trinity,

newborn in Bethlehem;

then bloodied by a crown of thorns

outside Jerusalem.

The dance of Trinity is meant

for human flesh and bone;

when fear confines the dance in death,

God rolls away the stone.

Come, speak aloud of Trinity,

as wind and tongues of flame

set people free at Pentecost

to tell the Savior’s name.

We know the yoke of sin and death,

our necks have worn it smooth;

go tell the world of weight and woe

that we are free to move!

Within the dance of Trinity,

before all worlds begun,

we sing the praises of the Three,

the Father, Spirit, Son.

Let voices rise and interweave,

by love and hope set free,

to shape in song this joy, this life:

the dance of Trinity.

NICENE CREED   (on festival Sundays)

Pastor: Let us confess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed.

All: We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven;

by the power of the Holy Spirit

    he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

    in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

    and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified.

He has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

We remember the missing and murdered indigenous women in Canada, the people of Syria, Iraq, Iran, Ukraine, Sudan, South Sudan, Afghanistan, Yemen, Venezuela, Somalia, Libya, Hong Kong, the Palestinians and Israelis,  Ethiopia, Mozambique, Myanmar, Belarus, the Rohingya Muslim refugees and the ethnic Karen of Myanmar, all at the Mexico/United States border seeking refuge, the people of Haiti suffering from natural and political disasters, the people of the Bahamas suffering from hurricanes, the people of India devastated by cyclones,  those in the Northwest Territory recovering from flooding, those in the United States, Canada, and throughout the world caught up in racism and injustice and the resulting violence, and those throughout the world, in Canada, in our province, and in our community threatened by the coronavirus.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE OF FAITH

 [The congregational response after each petition is:  “LEAD US IN THE WAY OF TRUTH AND LIFE.”

Pastor:  As we celebrate the joy of the resurrection, knowing that God has given us a new birth into a living hope, let us pray for the life of the Church, for the well-being of the world, and for the whole creation as it longs for the grace of God’s new life, saying, “Hear us, O God of life,” and responding, “Lead us in the way of truth and life.”

Petitioner:  God of promise, the power and mystery of your presence as trinity graces our lives with hope and renewal.  Open us up to the challenges you place before us and all your people, and help us to be your presence of love and your witness of faithfulness in the world. Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner:  God of all creation, you make, redeem, and sustain a world of awe, beauty and abundance.  Guide us in our actions to find ways to be careful stewards of all your creation that your glory may be revealed in lakes, rivers, and oceans, mountains, valleys, prairies, forests and deserts.   Bless us with good weather and rainfall, and give us thankful hearts for all your goodness.   Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner: God of life, through your revelation to us as Trinity you call us into a love that exceeds our understanding or desire.  As Trinity you model the way of living together as a community of unconditional love.  Make us and all your people into a church community  which abides in this trinitarian  love and embodies this perfect love in an imperfect world.   Hear us, O God of life…

Pastor:   God of healing, in our weakness we know not how to pray.  Intercede for us, bringing hope to the sorrowful, fearful, and anxious, and healing to those who are suffering or ill.  We remember especially before you …  Teach us to call you Abba as we entrust everything to you and pray that you bring an end to pain, loss, brokenness, and sorrow.   Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner:   God of hope, in spite of all we have heard and all that we have seen we forget where healing comes from, forget who binds all together as family, forget that life in Christ is completely different.  Through touching the water of baptism, hearing the Word of forgiveness, tasting the goodness of your life-giving meal, help us remember that we have a God of truth, a Triune God, who graciously creates, redeems and sustains all creation, and whose steadfast love for us is certain and assured.  Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner:   God of peace, protect and lead your world through these breathless times of trouble, violence, and distress.  Be with those in the path of violence and war.  Guard them against harm and give them a future with hope.  In these days when nation condemns nation send your peace to the places that need it most.  Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner:  God of mission, remind us of promise and possibilities, of failure and forgiveness and faith as through you, our Triune God, we seek to build a community of shared ministry and outreach.  The gift of your Spirit creates new ways to live.  Send your Spirit and renew our ministries and our callings,  and give us the voice to faithfully worship, nurture and proclaim Christ’s love for all in our community and in our world.    Hear us, O God of life…

Pastor:  Sustaining God, as you bring life even out of death, hear our call for your abundant life, make our prayers part of your new creation, and guide us with the hope of joy in your presence for the sake of the crucified and risen one, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

People:  Amen.

CLOSING HYMN

“I Bind unto Myself Today”

[click on the link below]

I bind unto myself today the strong name of the Trinity,

By invocation of the same, the Three in One and One in Three.

I bind this today to me forever

By power of faith, Christ’s incarnation;

His baptism in Jordan river,

His death on cross for my salvation;

His bursting from the spicèd tomb,

His riding up the heavenly way,

His coming at the day of doom

I bind unto myself today.

I bind unto myself the power

Of the great love of cherubim;

The sweet “Well done” in judgment hour;

The service of the seraphim;

Confessors’ faith, apostles’ word,

The patriarchs’ prayers, the prophets’ scrolls;

All good deeds done unto the Lord,

And purity of virgin souls.

I bind unto myself today

The power of God to hold and lead,

His eye to watch, His might to stay,

His ear to hearken to my need.

The wisdom of my God to teach,

His hand to guide, His shield to ward;

The Word of God to give me speech,

His heavenly host to be my guard.

Christ be with me, Christ within me,

Christ behind me, Christ before me,

Christ beside me, Christ to win me,

Christ to comfort and restore me.

Christ beneath me, Christ above me,

Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,

Christ in hearts of all that love me,

Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

I bind unto myself the name,

The strong name of the Trinity,

By invocation of the same,

The Three in One and One in Three.

By whom all nature hath creation,

Eternal Father, Spirit, Word:

Praise to the Lord of my salvation,

Salvation is of Christ the Lord.

Anthem for The Day of Pentecost:

“O Day Full of Grace”

[click on the link below]

O day full of grace that now we see

appearing on earth’s horizon,

bring light from our God that we may be

abundant in joy this season.

God, shine for us now in this dark place;

your name on our hearts emblazon.

O day full of grace, O blessed time,

our Lord on the earth arriving;

then came to the world that light sublime,

great joy for us all retrieving;

for Jesus all mortals did embrace,

all shame and despair removing.

For Christ bore our sins, and not his own,

when he on the cross was hanging;

and then he arose and moved the stone,

that we, unto him belonging,

might join with angelic hosts to raise

our voices in endless singing.

God came to us then at Pentecost,

the Spirit new life revealing,

that we might no more in death be lost,

its power over us dispelling.

This flame will the mark of sin efface

and bring to us all true healing.

When we on that final journey go

that Christ is for us preparing,

we’ll gather in song, our hearts aglow,

all joy of the heavens sharing,

and there we will join God’s endless praise,

with angels and saints adoring.

FIRST READING

Acts 2:1-21

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’ All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’ But others sneered and said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’

But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: ‘Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:
“In the last days it will be, God declares,
that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,
   and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions,
   and your old men shall dream dreams.
Even upon my slaves, both men and women,
   in those days I will pour out my Spirit;
     and they shall prophesy.
And I will show portents in the heaven above
   and signs on the earth below,
     blood, and fire, and smoky mist.
The sun shall be turned to darkness
   and the moon to blood,
     before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day.
Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

SECOND READING

Romans 8:22-27

We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labour pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

GOSPEL READING

John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15

‘When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning.

‘I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, “Where are you going?” But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgement: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgement, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.

‘I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

HYMN OF THE DAY

“O Holy Spirit, Enter In”

[click on the link below]

O Holy Spirit, enter in,

And in our hearts Your work begin,

and make our hearts your dwelling.

Sun of the soul, O Light divine,

Around and in us brightly shine,

your strength in us upwelling.

In your radiance life from heaven

now is given

overflowing,

gifts of gifts beyond all knowing.

Left to ourselves, we surely stray;

oh, lead us on the narrow way,

with wisest council guide us;

and give us steadfastness that we

may follow you forever free,

no matter who derides us.

Gently heal those hearts now broken;

give some token

you are near us,

whom we trust to light and cheer us.

O mighty Rock, O Source of Life,

Let your good Word, in doubt and strife,

be in us strongly burning,

That we be faithful unto death

and live in love and holy faith,

from you true wisdom learning.

Lord, your mercy on us shower;

by your power

Christ confessing,

we will cherish all your blessing.

NICENE CREED   (on festival Sundays)

Pastor: Let us confess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed.

All: We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven;

by the power of the Holy Spirit

    he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

    in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

    and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

Amen.

Petitioner:  Breathe on us, Breath of God, God of promise, with a mighty rush your people were set ablaze by holy fire.  Kindle in our hearts the blaze of your love, that we may proclaim your saving grace and share our hope in Christ to all the world and serve all people and all creation with the warmth of your love.  Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner:  Breathe on us, Breath of God, God of all creation, every living thing depends on you for life and sustenance.  Open your hand and fill all creatures with good things.  Renew the whole earth, especially in areas that have been damaged or destroyed, and make life spring forth in waters, fields, and forests.  Help us to delight in your creation and to care for it that all may be satisfied.  Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner:   Breathe on us, Breath of God, God of life, breathe that life into us and into our world and especially to those places and people whose lives have been disrupted and devastated in many ways.  Put our compassion into practice that the homeless might be sheltered, the hungry might be fed, the brokenhearted might be comforted, the anxious might be calmed, the burdened might find release, and that all who provide protection and aid might work in safety.  Hear us, O God of life…

Pastor:   Breathe on us, Breath of God, God of healing, in our weakness we know not how to pray.  Intercede for us, bringing hope to the sorrowful, fearful, and anxious, and healing to those who are suffering or ill.  We remember especially before you …  Make us agents of your love, serving the sick, broken, weak, grieving, and forgotten ones.   Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner:   Breathe on us, Breath of God, God of hope, we give you thanks for the Lutheran institutions and ministries who care for those approaching the end of life, or who experience the challenges of aging, infirmity, or ill health.  Help us support these ministries and bless them so that they continue to provide hospitality, respect, compassion, and care for many who are in need.  Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner:   Breathe on us, Breath of God, God of peace, protect and lead your world through these breathless times of trouble, violence, and distress, draw us together in our common humanity that your desire for peace and life may be known by governments and leaders in every time and place.  Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner:  Breathe on us, Breath of God, God of mission, we need the visions of the young and the dreams of the old to build a community of shared ministry. The gift of your Spirit creates new ways to live.   Open new opportunities, renew our ministries and our callings through your promise of new life and through your Spirit.  Give us words that will speak compassion, open ears to listen with care, provide us with the faith and courage to reach out and love all our neighbours, especially those we find hardest to love, so that we might be a community using our gifts for all people.

KOG SERVICE FOR MAY 16, 2021

 Now the Feast and Celebration

Easter, the resurrection of the crucified Jesus, is one single celebration which lasts for fifty days.  Each Sunday of Easter—from the Resurrection to Pentecost—celebrates the resurrection, the appearances, acknowledgment of Jesus as Lord, the community’s experience of the risen Lord, Christ’s mission to the disciples, and the promise of the Spirit.  This fifty-day long celebration testifies to the truth that the last word and the lasting word is not death, but God’s Word of life.

Hymn for The Ascension of Our Lord:

“Alleluia! Sing to Jesus”

[click on the link below]

Alleluia, sing to Jesus!

His the sceptre, his the throne.

Alleluia, his the triumph,

his the victory alone.

Hark, the songs of peaceful Sion

thunder like a mighty flood,

Jesus out of every nation

has redeemed us by his blood.

Alleluia, not as orphans

are we left in sorrow now;

Alleluia, he is near us,

faith believes nor questions how;

though the cloud from sight received him

when the forty days were o’er

Shall our hearts forget his promise

‘I am with you evermore’?

Alleluia, Bread of Angels,

thou on earth our food, our stay;

Alleluia, here the sinful

flee to thee from day to day;

intercessor, friend of sinners,

earth’s Redeemer, plead for me.

Where the songs of all the sinless

sweep across the crystal sea.

Alleluia, King eternal,

thee the Lord of lords we own;

Alleluia, born of Mary,

earth thy footstool, heav’n thy throne;

thou within the veil hast entered

robed in flesh, our great High Priest;

thou on earth both priest and victim

in the Eucharistic Feast.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Gracious and glorious God, you have chosen us as your own, and by the powerful name of Christ you protect us from evil.  By your Spirit transform us and your beloved world, that we may find our joy in Jesus Christ, your Son, and our Saviour and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

WORD

THE CHURCH HEARS THE GOOD NEWS OF GOD ACTING
IN THIS AND EVERY TIME AND PLACE

FIRST READING  Acts 1:15-17, 21-26

In those days Peter stood up among the believers (together the crowd numbered about one hundred and twenty people) and said, ‘Friends, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit through David foretold concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus— for he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry.’
So one of the men who have accompanied us throughout the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection.’ So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. Then they prayed and said, ‘Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.’ And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles.

SECOND READING  1 John 5:9-13

If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has testified to his Son. Those who believe in the Son of God have the testimony in their hearts. Those who do not believe in God have made him a liar by not believing in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son. And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

GOSPEL READING

John 17:6-19

‘I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one. While I was with them, I protected them in your name that you have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one destined to be lost, so that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth.

HYMN OF THE DAY

“Glorious Things of You Are Spoken”

[click on the link below]

Glorious things of thee are spoken,

Zion, city of our God;

he whose word cannot be broken

formed thee for his own abode;

on the Rock of Ages founded,

what can shake thy sure repose?

With salvation’s walls surrounded,

thou may’st smile at all thy foes.

See the streams of living waters,

springing from eternal love,

well supply thy sons and daughters,

and all fear of want remove;

who can faint while such a river

ever flows their thirst t’assuage?

Grace, which like the Lord, the giver,

never fails from age to age.

Round each habitation hov’ring,

see the cloud and fire appear

for a glory and a cov’ring,

showing that the Lord is near;

thus deriving from their banner

light by night and shade by day,

safe they feed upon the manna

which he gives them when they pray.

 Savior, if of Zion’s city

I, thro’ grace, a member am,

let the world deride or pity,

I will glory in thy name;

 fading is the worldling’s pleasure,

all his boasted pomp and show;

solid joys and lasting treasure

none but Zion’s children know.

Petitioner:  God of life, our deepest identity is discovered in baptism, proclaimed in the Word, and nourished in Christ’s holy supper.  Send your Spirit to help us in our struggle to be one people of faith who struggle for the unity that you intend for your Church and for the entire human family.  Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner:  God of all creation, you bless us with the beauty of earth, sky, sea, and all creatures.  You have given the gift of food in your creation.  Bless the labour of farmers, gardeners, and ranchers who till soil, spread seed, and raise animals.  Send renewing and refreshing rain.  Raise up plants and animals, trees and fruit that will feed all humankind.    Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner:   God of promise, through the prayer of your Son he has entrusted our communities, our lives, and our world into your care.  We, too, pray for unity and peace in our homes, relationships, workplaces, and neighbourhoods.  We pray for university students completing their studies this academic year, for safety and good health  in the upcoming holiday, and for those who are absent.  Draw all into your life-giving future: those who share our faith in Christ, those who do not, and especially those who have no faith.  Hear us, O God of life…

Pastor:   God of healing, your promises are medicine and healing for our bodies and spirit.  Be present with those experiencing grief and loss, sickness and pain, fear and depression, addiction and abuse, loneliness and brokenness.  We remember especially before you …  Make us agents of your love, serving the sick, broken, weak, and forgotten ones.  Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner:   God of peace, you have given the gift of reconciliation.  Make us humble in our relationships with other nations, protect and lead your world through times of trouble, violence, and distress.  Whether there is division or conflict among us or among nations, send your Spirit to stir up peace that your desire for peace and life may be known by everyone in every time and place.   Unite our words and deeds for justice with those of our sisters and brothers in the world. Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner:  God of hope, your Spirit makes us a part of Christ’s living and life-giving self and makes us alive with Christ’s life.  You call us into a love that exceeds our understanding or desire.  We pray that through your renewing way of forgiveness, you would make your people into a church which abides in the oneness of Christ’s love and embodies Christ’s perfect love in an imperfect world. Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner:  God of mission, you have redeemed and anointed your people through baptism and united us in the death and resurrection of Jesus for a life-giving mission.  Your resurrection creates new ways to live.  As Christ prays us into the joy and mutuality of relationship with him and mutual life, love, and joy with one another, open new opportunities, renew our ministries and our callings through your promise of new life and through your Spirit provide us with the faith and courage to reach out and love all our neighbours, especially those we find hardest to love, so that we might be a community using our gifts for all people.

“Now All the Vault of Heaven Resounds”

[click on the link below]

Now all the vault of Heav’n resounds

in praise of love that still abounds:

‘Christ has triumphed! He is living!’

Sing, choirs of angels, loud and clear!

Repeat their song of glory here:

‘Christ has triumphed! Christ has triumphed!’

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Eternal is the gift he brings,

therefore our heart with rapture sings:

‘Christ has triumphed! He is living!’

Now still he comes to give us life

and by his presence stills all strife.

Christ has triumphed! He is living!

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Oh, fill us, Lord, with dauntless love;

set heart and will on things above

That we conquer through your triumph;

Grant grace sufficient for life’s day

that by our lives we truly say:

‘Christ has triumphed! He is living!’

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Adoring praises now we bring

and with the heav’nly blessed sing:

‘Christ has triumphed! Alleluia!’

Be to the Father and our Lord,

to Spirit blest, most holy God,

All the glory, never ending!

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!”

Because of the high level of COVID cases throughout Saskatoon and the province, at an online consultation involving all the church leaders and clergy in the Synod it was strongly recommended that congregations continue to suspend all in person worship services until a time when it is safe to gather together.   King of Glory’s Church Council met to consider this recommendation and unanimously passed a motion that we suspend in person worship services and post online worship services on our website through May 2021.

KOG SERVICE FOR MAY 2ND, 2021

 NOW THE FEAST AND CELEBRATION

Easter, the resurrection of the crucified Jesus, is one single celebration which lasts for fifty days.  Each Sunday of Easter—from the Resurrection to Pentecost—celebrates the resurrection, the appearances, acknowledgment of Jesus as Lord, the community’s experience of the risen Lord, Christ’s mission to the disciples, and the promise of the Spirit.  This fifty-day long celebration testifies to the truth that the last word and the lasting word is not death, but God’s Word of life.

Hymn for The Easter Season:

“Christ Is Alive! Let Christians Sing”

[click on the link below]

Christ is alive! Let Christians sing.

His cross stands empty to the sky.

Let streets and homes with praises ring.

His love in death shall never die.

Chris is alive! No longer bound

To distant years in Palestine,

He comes to claim the here and now

And dwell in every place and time.

Not throned afar, remotely high,

Untouched, unmoved by human pains,

But daily, in the midst of life,

Our Savior in the Godhead reigns.

In every insult, rift, and war,

Where color, scorn, or wealth divide,

He suffers still, yet loves the more,

And lives, though ever crucified.

Christ is alive, and comes to bring

Good news to this and every age,

Till earth and all creation ring

With joy, with justice, love and praise.

GATHERING

WE RESPOND TO GOD’S CALL WITH PRAISE AND PRAYER,
AND PREPARE TO HEAR GOD’S WORD OF LIFE

GREETING

Pastor: Alleluia! Christ is risen.

People: Christ is risen indeed. Alleluia!

Pastor: The grace and peace of our risen Lord Jesus Christ,

PRAYER OF THE DAY

O God, you give us your Son as the vine apart from whom we cannot live.  Nourish our life in his resurrection, that we may bear the fruit of love and know the fullness of your joy, through Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

WORD

THE CHURCH HEARS THE GOOD NEWS OF GOD ACTING
IN THIS AND EVERY TIME AND PLACE

FIRST READING

Acts 8:26-40

Then an angel of the Lord said to Philip, ‘Get up and go towards the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.’ (This is a wilderness road.) So he got up and went. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of the Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning home; seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. Then the Spirit said to Philip, ‘Go over to this chariot and join it.’ So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked, ‘Do you understand what you are reading?’ He replied, ‘How can I, unless someone guides me?’ And he invited Philip to get in and sit beside him. Now the passage of the scripture that he was reading was this:
‘Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter,
   and like a lamb silent before its shearer,
     so he does not open his mouth.
In his humiliation justice was denied him.
   Who can describe his generation?
     For his life is taken away from the earth.’
The eunuch asked Philip, ‘About whom, may I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?’ Then Philip began to speak, and starting with this scripture, he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. As they were going along the road, they came to some water; and the eunuch said, ‘Look, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized?’ He commanded the chariot to stop, and both of them, Philip and the eunuch, went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he was passing through the region, he proclaimed the good news to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.

SECOND READING

1 John 4:7-21

Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us.

By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and do testify that the Father has sent his Son as the Saviour of the world. God abides in those who confess that Jesus is the Son of God, and they abide in God. So we have known and believe the love that God has for us.

God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them. Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness on the day of judgement, because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love. We love because he first loved us. Those who say, ‘I love God’, and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. The commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sisters also.

THE GOSPEL

Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St.________, the _________ chapter.

People: Glory to you, O Lord.

(The Gospel is read.)

Pastor: The Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise to you, O Christ.

GOSPEL READING

John 15:1-8

‘I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine-grower. He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.

HYMN OF THE DAY

“All Are Welcome”

[click on the link below]

Let us build a house where love can dwell

and all can safely live,

a place where saints and children tell

how hearts learn to forgive.

Built of hopes and dreams and visions,

 rock of faith and vault of grace;

here the love of Christ shall end divisions:

All are welcome, all are welcome,

all are welcome in this place.

Let us build a house where prophets speak,

and words are strong and true,

where all God’s children dare to seek

to dream God’s reign anew.

Here the cross shall stand as witness

and as symbol of God’s grace;

here as one we claim the faith of Jesus:

All are welcome, all are welcome,

all are welcome in this place.

Let us build a house where love is found

in water, wine, and wheat;

a banquet hall on holy ground,

where peace and justice meet.

Here the love of God, through Jesus,

is revealed in time and space;

as we share in Christ the feast that frees us:

All are welcome, all are welcome,

all are welcome in this place.

Let us build a house where hands will reach

beyond the wood and stone

to heal and strengthen, serve and teach,

and live the Word they’ve known.

Here the outcast and the stranger

bear the image of God’s face;

let us bring an end to fear and danger:

All are welcome, all are welcome,

all are welcome in this place.

Let us build a house where all are named,

their songs and visions heard

and loved and treasured, taught and claimed

as words within the Word.

Built of tears and cries and laughter,

prayers of faith and songs of grace;

let this house proclaim from floor to rafter:

All are welcome, all are welcome,

all are welcome in this place.

NICENE CREED   (on festival Sundays)

Pastor: Let us confess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed.

All: We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven;

by the power of the Holy Spirit

    he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

    in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

    and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

Amen.

Petitioner:  God of life, at baptism we are grafted into Christ and abide in his love.  Feed our hunger and satisfy our thirst with Christ’s word and sacraments and encourage us so that we might become fruitful through our worship, in our mission, and by our service to others.   Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner:  God of all creation, we are nourished and abide in the abundance of your creation.  Spread your sheltering presence over all new things in your creation: plants sprouting out of soil and young animals growing stronger.  Protect all that is fragile.  We pray for plentiful rains, fertile soil, just prices, and safety for all who plant and harvest our food.   Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner:   God of promise, you call us into situations and prepare places for us that require difficult choices and decisions.  Give us the self-discipline and forethought, the faith and the courage, to recognize the needs of not only our families and friends, but also our enemies, and to respond to all with forgiveness, love, and care.  Hear us, O God of life…

Pastor:   God of healing, we pray for those who wait for relief from their burdens, anxieties, and griefs, for those who feel unloved or who find themselves in crisis, and for those who long for their health to be restored.  We remember especially before you ….   May all find comfort in the abiding presence of Jesus. Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner:  God of hope, your Spirit makes us a part of Christ’s living and life-giving self and makes us alive with Christ’s life.  By your Spirit shape us to share your love with one another, so that others see your love and come to know you. While we abide securely within your branches, alert us to hear the cries for justice of our sisters and brothers in the world who are broken and helpless, and who suffer in the face of oppression, persecution, and violence. Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner:   God of peace, you come down to us and make your dwelling and abide among mortals.  Bring health and joy to all.  Bring peace to our urban centres and bring well-being to our rural areas.  Bring employment, security and productivity to our cities and visit farms and ranches with good weather, fair markets, and resources.  Hear us, O God of life…

Petitioner:  God of mission, you have redeemed and anointed your people through baptism and united us in the death and resurrection of Jesus for a life-giving mission.  Your resurrection creates new ways to live.  As Christ, the vine, brings food to us, the branches, open new opportunities, renew our ministries and our callings through your promise of new life and through your Spirit provide us with the faith and courage to reach out and love all our neighbours, especially those we find hardest to love, so that we might bear fruit for the life of the world.

“Love Divine, All Loves Excelling”

[click on the link below]

Love divine, all loves excelling,

Joy of heaven to earth come down;

Fix in us thy humble dwelling;

All thy faithful mercies crown!

Jesus, Thou art all compassion,

Pure unbounded love Thou art;

Visit us with Thy salvation;

Enter every trembling heart.

Breathe, oh, breathe thy loving Spirit,

into every troubled breast;

let us all in thee inherit;

let us find thy promised rest.

Take away the love of sinning;

Alpha and Omega be;

end of faith, as its beginning,

set our hearts at liberty.

Come, Almighty to deliver,

Let us all Thy life receive;

Suddenly return and never,

Never more Thy temples leave.

Thee we would be always blessing,

Serve Thee as Thy hosts above,

Pray and praise Thee without ceasing,

Glory in Thy perfect love.

Finish then Thy new creation;

Pure and spotless let us be.

Let us see Thy great salvation

Perfectly restored in Thee;

Changed from glory into glory,

Till in heaven we take our place,

Till we cast our crowns before Thee,

Lost in wonder, love, and praise.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Because of the high level of COVID cases throughout Saskatoon and the province, at an online consultation involving all the church leaders and clergy in the Synod it was strongly recommended that congregations continue to suspend all in person worship services until a time when it is safe to gather together.   King of Glory’s Church Council met to consider this recommendation and unanimously passed a motion that we suspend in person worship services and post online worship services on our website through May 2021. Of course, should there be any significant changes with regard to the pandemic situation the Church Council will revisit the issue.
